I also feel this is true for most sables to basically be the lighter or darker color as they were at birth. Most people I think just use the work Black sable to describe the really dark adult sable coats you see, some do look close to black, but arn't really "Blacks". 
I have a Patterned sable male, he has produced sables that are nice sables with tar heels/and penciling, he has produced 2 patterned sables like himself. So far those patterned sables do not have tar heels or penciling and are marked like a black/tan saddle back. sometimes hard to tell in pictures, is easier in person to tell.
Some folks are just partial to that awesome look of a really dark sable.
