I would think i would start with a fecal test and an x ray or ultrasound to see if something is not right in his digestives system. The test for EPI is a TLI test and it needs to be fasting for 12 hours. As long as you draw blood you can test for TLI PLI and possibly do a cobalamin folate test. at 5 months, even if he has EPI, I don't think he would deficient in cobalamin, but those tests give you an insight into the intestinal activity without being invasive. go to TAMU(Texas A and M) webiste and search for the assays(tests) they run or EPI info. Just my two cents after doign the EPI dog thing.... I have a new pup and when I run her first blood work, I will be testing to see what her TLI is just to see...

As others stated, 12 hours no food; boiled chicken and rice for about 3 days, then ease back into regular food. When you start easing back into the regular food, add some plain yogurt each feeding; a spoonful is enough. This gets his good bacteria back in line. If the runs have not cleared up by the time you start back on regular food, then go see a vet. Also see a vet if any other symptoms come up; i.e. stops eating, lethargic, vomiting (he will probably try to eat grass to cause himself to vomit. This is a normal reaction for a dog that has an upset stomach) more than if he ate grass. Make sure he is drinking water and going to pee regularly. If either of these stop, see a vet immediately, dehydration is setting in.
Look on-line for a company that sells probiotics for dogs. FortaFlora is good and dogs like it. You do not need a vet for it and it is good to use for about 7 - 10 days when a dog gets the runs.
How long do you have to use the lube stuff? I recommend either cone of shame or donut to prevent him from licking while you are using the lube stuff.

make sure you retreat for worms 21 days from the day you start.......
the wormer only kills the worms that have already hatched and retreatment is needed to kill ones that have hatched after treatment.
