"I would think linebreeding on Belschik would get you very angry screaming little midget dogs".

Workingdogz's comment made me choke on my coffee since I was laughing so hard. Bwahahaha!

(No disrespect meant to anyone for their choice in dog size ...although I would hesitate to refer to Bosco as a 93 lb dummy. LOL.)

"BIG DOGS BREAK DOWN" is on of the most over used FALSE statements in dogs. It's all about STRUCTURE. Good structure is good structure whether the dog is 48# - 70# for a female or 66# - 88# for a male. If the dog has proper working structure at any size the dog WILL BE SOUND.

OP, I don't see all these "oversized GSD's" out there in the working lines that you refer too. As a matter of fact there seems to be more medium sized dogs out there right now. I would actually like to see a little more size bred back into some of these GSD's out there right now. After all we are talking GSD's not Mals.

Yes Ramgsd there are far more dogs that are over the breed standard then dogs that weigh under the breed standard.  I very rarely see a gsd that is under 55 pounds. But I see many that are over 88.

Of course there are going to be fewer under-sized GSD. Again we are talking GSD's. Who wants a Mini-GSD? They are supposed to be a substantial dog. Either way, above or below standard is incorrect. I think Workingdogz was just pointing out what has commonly been found with line breeding on Belschik.

As for information on Ufo breedings you may want to talk with Lee Hough   wolfstraum.net . While I don't think she's doing any breedings at this time I'm sure she can point you in the right direction.

Thanks ramgsd.  It is nice to have different opinions without people acting like children. I hope this post continues in this positive direction. I personally like hearing opinions that are different then mine. I also think that these are two dogs that we should all try and learn more about.

Lisa in Michigan from zu Treuen Handen owns a Belschik daughter. She may be able to point you in the right direction.

workingdogz, would that be in contrast to those HUGE midget dogs seen elsewhere [perhaps at Bob's Circus]?

by ramgsd on 07 February 2013 - 19:02

"would that be in contrast to those HUGE midget dogs seen elsewhere"

That would be correct. It's much like the difference between "JUMBO shrimp" and the much smaller "popcorn" variety.  Teeth Smile

For the record, though, I consider 60-65# females and 70-75# males to be the IDEAL size for the GSD.  They are a medium-sized breed of dog, and anyone who has to hoist a dog into an air sling or carry one up a ship's stairs, or boost one up into a window or over a fence, knows exactly why that's the ideal size for the breed.  I'd happily welcome those 'very angry screeching little midget dogs'--I've always loved Belschik's physical appearance, in addition to his work ethic--though it wouldn't break my heart if the screeching trait fell by the wayside....as long as the loss of it didn't diminish the rest.  Thumbs Up
