Shame on you Darka.  Yes, having the ears up is purly a conformation issue, but you should not simply disregard it.  For dogs that have ears that fold, whether naturally or by weak gentics, they are more prone to ear infections.  If you do not belive me, talk to owners of labs or cockerspaniels.

SitasMom was only suggesting ways to resolve the issue.  These are simple ways and poses no risk to the dog.  I agree that it could be a simple matter of teething.  If the ears are not up by 6 months though, the OP should at least attempt to get them up.

If nothing works, then yes, leave them alone.  If the dog goes swimming, dry off the inside of the ear afterwards to help prevent any infection.

I think there is good chance of them going back up. I have found the bigger , heavier pups ears sometimes take a little longer.
I might try trimming the hair on ears. I sometimes have to trim the hair on yorkies ears due to the hair.

Those puppy ears will drive a person crazy!  I know they give me nothing but grief, until they are finally up.  Give the pup knuckle bones, which will help to exercise and strenghthen those little muscles that help the ears to stand.   Use a "Breathe Right" strip in the ear to bolster it.  I did with one pup and it worked very well for the few weeks needed for the ear to get up and stay up.  Regular Smile

The reference to ear infections should be heeded. I had one pup that had an ear infection, yeast,  at about 11 weeks.   The infection leads to head-shaking, which in turn leads to "broken" ears.

Also, check the food you are feeding and make sure it is grain-free and potato-free.  Diet is related to any possible yeast issue.

Best regards.

Discomfort to the puppy with constant gluing and taping is one reason why I would not want to do this to my dog. Sorry, this is a Shepherd, it's ears should come up on their own without help. Period.

Well Darka while I basically agree,  we do have to
remember that the genetics for soft ears have
always been in the breed;  they are bound to show
up occasionally.  Particularly where countries do
not have ABSOLUTE control on which dogs get
bred.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes she still is teething I keep catching her chewing on her teeth and spitting them out.I do keep my dogs in bones, kongs and tried the antlers.I'm really not worried at this point because she did just turn 5 months old.Now we were just out playing in the snow both ears up beautiful. And right now first thing in the morning they are usually up.I keep telling myself this girl is big and i'm factoring that in.I had her shipped to me when she was 11 wks old.The weight of her and the crate was 54lbs.and of course that means the cost went up.I have thought about the taping but I talk myself out of it.I will try trimming the hair around the ear.Oh and I did forget to mention the ear that is down now was up for about a week then went down and up the other.I was told never to massage the ears I was feeding my dogs Taste of the wild but we switch to Blue buffalo about 3 months ago.So is there anything I can add to her diet?
Thanks again
Steve

Darka, who said anything about taping?

As far as glueing a small piece of moleskin over the crease is about as uncomfortable as a bandade on scrape..... it's feels a bit funny for a minute and after an hour you forget its there.

Sorry you don't like the idea, but many people want to have their pet look as nice as possible, including 2 erect ears.

I have to agree with Sitasmom, it does not hurt to give the ear a little support during the times of teething, it doesn't hurt the dog at all, I use Tear Mender fabric glue and the moleskins, and have beautiful ears every time.  Why not try to help support the ears, everyone wants those pretty ears.

Now will she benefit if she is taking gelatin (unflavored),glucosamin and Chondrointin ( 1 tab twice a day).
I have read a few post and they mention lines with soft ears.
Here is her pedigree

In that picture she was about 3 months old.
