I'd still be careful with this dog and not let my guard down until I was more confident that this was a fluke or misunderstood behavior. More than one person has received a serious bite from a dog because they didn't recognize or ignored signalments that it was coming. It happens to the best. One published dog behaviorist I know had a substantial piece of her face removed when her husband's Terv resented her forcing him off the bed. She admitted that he had displayed dominate signs she should have heeded, but she ignored them instead. I myself was bitten twice by my 2nd GSD because I let my guard down. Not saying this is a dangerous dog, just saying err on the side of caution to protect yourself. Dont fear him, but you must respect him and what damage he could cause. One day "negotiations" may not be enough. Good luck.

I think you hit upon something that every dog owner should be proofing their dogs against.  When down on the ground (even in cases where intruders knock down the handler), even seemingly faithful/harmless dogs have been known to attack their handlers, shocking as it sounds, and proofing against that phenomenon ahead of time is advisable.

Everyone should be doing the proofing, with all of their dogs, and not just the OP, IMHO.

So. The question is. Have they to fight against their wolf genes? Am I right?

by Blitzen on 28 December 2012 - 14:12

If there are any wolf genes in a purebred GSD they are way back in the pedigree and have no influence on your dog's temperament. I really think you need to find someone who know dogs and the breed to teach you how to train and handle this dog. He doesn't sound to me like a dog for a novice owner. Can you ask his breeder for advice?
