Taught my five month old puppy to retrieve various items (not his toys) in five minutes. Because I am teaching competitive obedience classes, I decided to teach him scent discrimination exercises as an experiment to see if I could learn anything for teaching to my clients.
First step: retrieve the dowel that I have stuck under my armpit for a second. He did it fine a couple times.
Second Step: retrieve the dowel in a pile of his toys. He did it no problem. Didn't even try to grab one of his toys.
Third Step: retrieve the dowel hidden under his toys so I can make sure he's using his nose. No problem, searched methodically, and found his dowel.
Fourth step: retrieve the scented dowel among a group of two other identical dowels that I have not touched in at least a day. He brought back all three dowels! And again, when I repeated it. Instead of teaching him to use his nose, I taught him to retrieve wooden dowels!

Another happy note
It snowed this week and the pup discovered how fun it is to stick one's nose into each and every hollow at 11:30 at nite when it is FREEZING.
What, pee? Why would I do that when I could be smelling everything? I know that you'll let me out at 3 am when I really have to go anyway.

congrats on your new puppy 4pack! I am now bording the rest of that litter and "wow", what super drives! We have 3 boys and 2 girls left. All are very balanced in drives with GREAT grips!
