GSD 1997,

Forums, the internet, and reading/media are good places to START looking for information about Search and Rescue.

However, if you truly want to work in Search and Rescue you need to talk to a K9 SAR team, go watch some of their trainings, volunteer to be a subject for them.

As Prager said, Search and Rescue is not to be taken lightly, someone's life may depend on you and your dog's abilities. I'll add that it is also not a cheap or convenient venture to participate in. You will be required to purchase your own gear. I'm at about $1000 in equipment so far, plus recurring expenses like gas and training seminars. We get called out at all hours of the night and day, in all climates and all types of terrain. You also need to consider your family and employer. Will they support you? Will your employer be ok with you calling in sick at the last minute, multiple times a year?

Also, keep in mind that Schutzhund tracking and SAR trailing are different.
In the sport world, tracking is very precise and trained on a specific surface, usually grass or a freshly plowed field. At trials points are given for this precision.

In SAR work trailing is not precise, is trained over many types of surfaces and can be days old. If you take a SAR trailing dog to a Schutzhund trial to track you WILL lose points.

Good Luck in your endeavor.

Happy Training,
Cheri
