Char
Yes, they have fish oil in the form of sardines about 5 X per week.  And sometimes salmon oil.

The oil I use is Organic Virgin Coconut oil, and it smells of coconut.

Abby:
If you decide to take some of the good stuff, pl. let us know the effects.
BTW, you may be interested to know that coconut oil is consumed in large amounts in south India, and the people there have great hair, especially the women.

OK, what  brand of coconut oil do you guys recommend, I am willing to give it a try.........I am buying milk for myself.. I am the one in need of shiny hair! :o)

Really you can buy any brand you can find;  Wal Mart even has a good grand, any natural store, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's all have different brands, tons of stuff on the net if you don't want to shop at the store yourself.  Spectrum, very common even at some grocery stores, Organic/natural if you can but not absolutely necessary cold pressed is also good.  BOL,  you won't be sorry especially if you are talking for GSD's.  Nan

Yea Abby...welcome to the reduced dog hair clubTeeth Smile.

One thing I have noticed.....there seems to be a difference of effectiveness between my two dogs (Cisco my  GSD...and Suzie my chow mix). While both dogs coats are thick Cisco's coat is softer and he is shedding way less than before coconut oil. Suzie's coat is not as soft (as Cisco's) and she still sheds a lot but,not quite as much as before coconut oil. Granted, Suzie is 12 and has cancer. Honestly, we did not think we would have her this long after her diagnosis in January. So I think that she is just not as healthy overall and that has made a difference. However, her energy level has doubled and she is much friskier than before coconut oil. The dogs love it and I have not noticed any weight gain in either.......so IMO the positives far out way any negatives...(not that I've read or heard about any).

In my original post about coconut oil I was complaining about the cost....Several people suggested alternative brands that were much cheaper.

Here are a couple of links for those brands......http://www.vitacost.com/vitacost-extra-virgin-certified-organic-coconut-oil-54-fl-oz-7 ....thank you Pharoh.

All of my k9's get coconut oil daily (2 middle aged girls, one meat headed boy). My 9 yr. old girl has pancreatitis and since putting her on the coconut oil (which she tolerates very well) the nasty smell she had about her is nearly completely gone. All three have great coats and appear to not shed nearly as much. I am awaiting the next round of coat blowing to see if it has any effect on it. All three get a big blob (1.5 to 2 tbs) in their morning and evening meal. I use it to cook with and put about a tablespoon in my morning coffee.

Would it do any harm to use the coconut oil when your dog is on kibble? Or does that not matter so much?

Lani---In the coffee? Not a bad idea, actually. I may have to try that.

by Nans gsd on 22 October 2012 - 01:10

Would be wonderful over kibble, great benefits, you cannot go wrong.  Coffee, it is already in the creamer I use but I spread a small amount on my ONE piece of toast I get with a little honey.  Supposedly helps to lubricate joints, etc.  Nan
