Me too, YR, I never considered early x-rays just because of needing "proof" for "just-in-case"
With the right vet, I think PennHip is very valuable, and that can be done as early as 4 months (I think, didn't double-check before posting this) and the a-stamp can be done at 12 months.
I'm brainstorming right now, lol. Considering this thread, I think I may tweak my future x-ray protocol plans. Perhaps do something like this:
Pennhip between 6 and 12 months (methinks 12 months, only reason to do it sooner is if I want to place a pup earlier if it's hips don't turn out good)
a-stamp and OFA prelim @ 12 months
OFA officials at 3 yrs. I say 3 years because the longer you wait, the more likely negative changes will occur. So if the hips still look great at an older age, then you know you've got a pretty sound dog.
I'm just musing here, for my own personal future breeding plans.
