Kinda cheesy, but his products have helped me.

Herbal supplements and other natural medicines, vitamins etc. CAN interact with cancer treatment drugs, so if he goes this route he needs to let his doctor know.

For instance, while you're undergoing chemo, the doctor does NOT want you taking antioxidants, as they help to PROTECT the cancer cells!

To everyone who sent me and my dad well wishes and prayers, thank you. 

Yesterday my dad was at the urologist's.  They did not do a biopsy yet because they wanted my dad off of some of his meds and on antibiotics and other meds for 1 week prior to biopsy, so biopsy scheduled for the Wednesday a week from tomorrow (on 8/15/2012)
But the urologist was not positive, he was pretty frank, he's certain that dad has stage 4 prostate cancer (metastasized)
Later today my dad will be at the hospital to do a full body CT scan and a nuclear bone scan to see how extensively the cancer has spread. 

I will look into and try to get my dad to do what some of you have suggested.  But I'm not very hopeful.  Before this past January my dad didn't take any kind of medicine or supplements, and he's seriously hating every bit of having to take any medications now.  One of my dad's best friends is a chiropractor whose very knowledgeable in health supplements, he bought my dad a TON of very expensive supplements just a couple months ago to help with dad's heart disease and diabetes, my dad has yet to take a single one, even when I've tried adding them along with his meds.  It's just "too much" for him  
My mother and her husband are extreme health nuts, I myself take Monavie daily and I love indian and middle-eastern foods (which my dad refuses to touch) my dad is great about being physically active, but has no desire to start doing health foods/supplements. 
Except I do think I can get him to take flaxseed oil, that's supposed to be very good for people with cancer.  My dad loves eating cottage cheese with tomatoes (and sometimes tunafish) so I think I can get him to add flaxseed oil with his cottage cheese (that combination is supposed to be beneficial together.)

We also talked some to an oncologist yesterday about cancer treatment, they haven't prescribed any specific treatments yet (except for tripling his lovastatin )  The doctor mentioned some kinds of drugs they may put dad on (can't remember any of the names) but the most common types of cancer treatments are extremely damaging to the heart, and because dad already has such bad heart disease it's highly likely that they won't/can't do regular cancer treatment.  (like chemo/radiation)

Dad is depressed and I'm pretty bummed too, at this point I'm just wondering how much time he has and if maybe he'll get a chance to go on vacation before it's too late. 
I will update when we know more.  I'll add some pics of my dad with our GSDs later too.

Here are the best pics I could find on my computer of my dad with some of our dogs, most of the photos with my dad are not in digital format and I don't have a working scanner, so these are it.  These pics are between 2 and 5 yrs old, including some of the photos that were taken by a local news person when members of our local community pooled their money together to buy dad a 5 mo. old GSD puppy (our Benjamin) because Klaire had passed away and everyone missed seeing him with a GSD around town.  (I posted a thread w/ news article on this a few years ago)



 

Do NOT have your dad take flaxseed or flaxseed oil without checking with the doctor -- it can be harmful for men with prostate cancer. Sending healing thoughts.
