Yep I am afraid I have to disagree on this one with you Bee and agree with Hexe and Jenn. And Jenn you are right--I have been distracted and frustrated to the point of pulling my hair out and screaming, as Mama used to say if I thought it would do any good. And yes I have been frustrated with the dogs to the point of just having to get out for awhile. But NEVER NEVER have I forgotten their needs in my frustration. Like you say it's auto pilot. They always have the air on in the summer, the tv on, full water dishes and bucket inside and out--I have 2 bitches that occasionally have a good mixup and I always make sure one of them is crated before I leave. If I, a lowly dog lover, can remember all that before then DUH. And as Hexe says especially in certain climates. And my state is a hot and humid one.
Just the other day a baby died in a car in Ok City and BTW she is in jail and she damn well needs to stay there. And I hate to sound like this but I hope the OK County Jail has no ac because maybe being a little hot will make her think more on her stupidity.
They say this officer is real distressed. I bet he's not so distressed he's outside in the heat cooking his brain--he's in the ac in his house. Not fair at all cause he had his chance.

Beetree, as usual, your insistence in finding some fault in everything I stay falls pretty short of its mark. What is your point? How are they any different from each other? Both are incompetent and irresponsible and inexcusable, distracted or not. I don't hang out on the OT side- I actually have things to do in real life, but I think I saw and/or posted in the thread about a mother killing her baby in a hot car, unless there was more than one. I saw on in "latest posts" that Keith started- not sure what forum it was in. Did I somehow excuse her that you're offended that I'm vilifying the K9 "handler"? Totally, 100%, agree with Hexe.

I am so sorry to hear about ANOTHER dog of an officer of the law that has died due to neglect.

However, I saw this very same thing going on in my area;  an officer having lunch with his dog in the car, not so much as even a window cracked in the car, but a bystander was talking with him and he was explaining that they had a fan going in the car for the dog.  JHC;  I wanted to just strangle him and thank god it was not too hot that day.

Fine, next time I see this I am going to call 911, hopefully to save the dogs life.  If not they can just come and check on the dog..  Tuff shit.

Jenni, I said, DEMONIZING one OVER the other.  I could care less where or who you hang out with, that is irrelevant to me, doesn't make your choices superior if that is what you want to convey.

Your statement  SAID and pointed to cops, when you said those who we rely to protect us did not protect their own dog officer, or something to that point. Don't make me go back and dig it up exactly if you  do understand the point.

The Mom was... what? ... compared to the cop? They were BOTH DISTRACTED and they were in charge of someone they cared about and still they died because of their negligence. Not incompetence, you need to separate those concepts.

There was a case here in Calgary a few years ago where an officer left Three police K9's in the van when he went in the office to do paperwork, when he came back out later on the dogs had overheated and Two of the dogs had died and the third one was rushed to emergency after being bought back to life with CPR, I don't remeber if it lived or not.

Off with his head , no lame excuses accepted.

The guy is heartbroken!   There has to be more to this guy's story. I think he's suffering enough and will each day relive  the loss of his partner and dog, that was HIS responsibility. That has to be agonizing.

Zero tolerance, I just don't know if it is fair in these tragically unfortunate cases. But I'm not expecting to change minds here.

I say BOTH, mother and officer are guilty of criminally negligent homicide. If the dog was killed in the line of duty by a perp, they would be charged in the death of the dog. As others stated, when you have dogs and kids, you usually run on auto pilot when it comes to the everyday care, demanded by both. Anything less, is negligence.

I raised 2 kids, helped raise my grandkids, had GSDs, & am a nurse, who on rare occassion gets called in for emergencies...not so much now, but when I worked critical care I was was paged in on stat calls fairly often.

That was when I lived in Las Vegas, & sometimes we would get paged when the kids & I were out in the car, & I had 1 hour to respond to a page, & it was always a life or death situation. So it was a highly stressful situation when that pager went off. And I consider myself suseptable to brain farts, especially under stress. I leave notes all over to make sure I remember stuff.

Did I ever leave my kids in a hot car? No.

I always had a plan to make sure they were safe, no matter what. And now the same goes for my dogs. There is something that kicks in when you truely care about someone or something, that just needles you into always checking, always planning, always having them in the forefront of your mind. Especially if you have any doubts about them being able to care about themselves.

That sense of responcibility controls you, not you it. In fact, most moms, & other responcible folks have a hard time turning that off! I'm sorry, but I bet that officer's true distress is for himself. I couldn't bear to read the article either. My only caveat is that if people are very sleep deprived, or getting older, sometimes their brains don't function well. (Of course, tho', I worked night shift, & now I'm an old fart....but .....!!)

I just don't get how people can do this. Maybe they wanted to be rid of their partner/kids, & couldn't even admit it to themselves.....? So, a slip-up with a hot car...? I think mental evaluation & then possible jail time. I usually say "there but for the Grace of God go I"...but I have a really hard time with this particular thing.
