I have a breeder she is a friend( I do not agree on her breeding goals) not a hour a way from me she breeds ASL/WSL cross and get's 800.00 to a 1000.00 a pup
They are just pets and I have no idea if she even does HD/ED but she does sale a lot of pups.
BUT you could NOT give me one of her dogs for free, hell I don't care if you said you would buy it's food for life and pay vet bills it would be a waist of space at my home. So quality and asking price is in the eye of the beholder.
I know of another breeder close that ask a similar price again couldn't give me one !! So I think it is more in researching a breeder that has like minded goals and investing in the hard work they have already laid,(.Same goals) that I think is key to finding a good breeder is communication and ARE you on the same page NOT asking price.

I think I will follow Riks advice and learn a bit more, and thoroughly background the breeder as well as the GSD he's selling. before I spend any money.

the more you learn about the breed, the more you will be saved from over priced fantasy.
When you come to know just what it is you want and what you will do with it, the better off you will be as well.
Don't buy into the hype, do not cecum to the craft of salesmanship, know a few simple truths.
The price of a dog has nothing to do with it's greatness, it's a crap shoot no matter what anyone tells you.
Like Forrest Gump's box O chocolates and that's a fact.
The internet is the worst place to begin.
A great dog could cost as little as a few hundred dollars, and a two thousand dollar dog could just as easily turn out to be the biggest mistake of your life.
There are no guarantees, only your own knowledge and judgment would I trust if I were you.
So,
learn more, much more, before you begin.
Moons.

Shopping and emotions definately should not go hand in hand. A Higher Price does not always mean you are buying qaulity. Some dogs might be great dogs separetly but together they might not be the greatest match.
Why dont you put the pedigree of the pup on here so someone might be able to give you some help and guidance.
