To be fair, I think you would have to ask each individual handler as to why they pulled.....there are enough rumors floating around on the internet as to one judge in particular having a sharp pencil - but it is not that unusual to have no shows and pulls in trials for whatever reason.

It's a national event. I would hope that all the judges pencils are sharp!
If competitors are pulling because of that, they shouldn't be competing there.

Agreed OGBS. I think if the competitors that pulled were willing to actually tell why they pulled there would probably be one of three answers and NOT what is being rumored about on the internet = sharp pencils. During practice at the AWDF, the team was not where they were performance wise prior to leaving (days, weeks, months before) = handler's head was not in it or the dog was not showing what the handler knew the dog could show = the handler knows best what he's going to see from his dog on the field ......other then oops moments. The handler and/or dog were not physically well. Some entered weeks ago - had something come up and were unable to attend. I know David Greene competed at the FMBB (Malinois World Championship) in Italy less then a week before the start of the AWDF - he came in third place representing the USA - wonderful accomplishment for him and his Malinois:)

I firmly believe that the reason for the pulling was NOT because of sharp pencils ..... c'mon for crying out loud ...... any National event has sharp pencils ...I have competed on the National and World level .... its a given, you are scored a bit sharper ... the real reason is because they were unable to get thier dogs right to thier own correctness and wanted to show the dog as they felt the dog was ready and apparently did not have the time in order to prepare OR correct the dogs behaviour and or actions. In essence I am sure they thought the dog would be ready but indeed when trial time come around ..... the dog was not ready. That is why it is wise to send in at the LAST moment if you need to wait to the witching hour ................. and further more that it will be unlikely to clear up a problem from the entry closing to the trial time..... so really when it comes down to it ...... the closing date ...... if your dog is not ready by the closing date ...... my rule is ..... dont waste the money on the entry ..... unless you have the money to burn ...... There are some really nice scores with Frans Slaman 98 93 92 and Mark Natinsky 96 92 95 both finishing with 283 - My personal favorite: John Soares and Vion are standing at 100 - 96 - 96 = 292 Definitely check out twitter if you can...they are posting scores there pretty fast.
