Nick and Jackie at I-Guard International are INCREDIBLE! Wonderful people to work with, they have wonderful dogs that they train and title and show themselves. Nick stands behind his dogs and his breeding and definitely makes sure you get the right dog for you. :) Cannot say enough good things about him and his wife.

Regarding a pup being selected for you, in my experience, usually you are hopefully high enough up on the list to be able to say what it is you are seeking and already know what the breeding pair are likely to bring to the table. Usually different folks want something different.  For example, you are not wanting to compete with your dog or work them on the streets (Law enforcement, customs etc.) so you would probably not only be ok with, but want a lower drive nice dog that has a good off switch.  If other people want to work their dogs or show them, then you all might not even be interested in the same dogs, so that makes picking easier.  They don't just shove a dog at you and say, "Take this one or get lost." Good breeders take the time to know you, what you want, what you are capable of taking on, and will try to match you or even tell you frankly their dogs or the particular breeding/match is not one for you. Also helps to know if you want a show line, like Heidi breeds or working lines.  Also, you might think about a German Shepherd rescue to save a good dog that needs a home.

You might also call the German Shepherd Dog Club of Orgeon:

MARLEY

MARLEY'S owner is disabled and can no longer take care of him. He has had him since he was 8 1/2 weeks old. Marley is 14 months old, high energy, untrained and not fixed. He is very protective, great with the grand children but it is unknown how he would be with other kids or people in general. He is a indoor dog, going ouy only to potty or play. "I can not take care of him because of my medical condition. It just breaks my heart to see him inside with me and not being able to play or be a normal dog." Contact John at 503-983-5055 or eightbree@netzero.com.

RASPUTIN

I am moving into Portland, OR and taking a new job that will require a lot of travel and will be unable to give my wonderful German Shepherd the attention she deserves. Rasputin is a spayed female black German Shepherd, 4 years old. She has had basic and advanced obedience training at http://www.petvillageltd.com/training.php. She has all of her shots, is very well tempers with people and other dogs her size, has a strong prey drive and is not good with cats or very small dogs. SHILOH NEEDS HELP NOW!

While at the shelter she has shown no signs of aggression and has been sweet and gentle with everyone; she is housetrained, good on a leash and well behaved in her kennel. Unfortunately the family she lived with was elderly and unable to contain her (or even walk her on the leash), so she ended up getting out multiple times. She has bitten a person on a bicycle and possibly a small dog while roaming and is now labeled a dangerous dog in our county—thus we are unable to place her at our shelter.

SHILOH IS AT THE SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON HUMANE SOCIETY

ROCKY

Rocky needs a home quickly. His owner is in emergency housing and Rocky is limited to two weeks of foster care. Rocky is a light colored male about 2 1/2 years old with hair loss over his croup which has not been treated. He is reportedly in good health although could gain a few pounds. He is good with other dogs in the foster home and with people.

50ish;
You have managed to get some good feedback,
it's no fluke that Heidi has been recommended more than once

Seek a breeder that is doing something with their dogs in a recognized arena.
Be sure the breeding dogs are testedtestedtested!
Get PROOF of the testing then VERIFY it through whatever association
they are supposed to be certfieid through.
Many of these queries are easily done online.

Accept NOTHING less.
If a breeder cannot be bothered to test/certify their breeding dogs,
no matter what excuse or grandiose story they come up with, walk or run away and FAST!

I'd suggest again to contact Heidi, make a trip out and meet her and her dogs.
She has black and red dogs that work/title,
and have good temperment AND health testing done
AND working titles AND conformation/korungs.
She also has dogs she has kept back from her own breedings as well and has
worked/titled/koered them too.

Wherever you end up buying from at the very least, insist on health testing/certification and
some type of working title, preferably with the breeder being the handler/trainer of the dog

Heidi will offer you excellent breeder support as well, can't beat that all wrapped up in one stop

Hey 50ish,
Why not adopt another dog from a Rescue ? They evaluate the dogs and place them according to your family. There are 2 in the Seattle area, Washington GSD Rescue and Northwest GSD Rescue, I am also here in Montana GSD/Belgian Malinios Rescue. I adopted a dog out your way just a month or so ago.
There are so many dogs and pups out there needing homes, ones that are being put to sleep daily, because there are so many breeders breeding....
Try to find it in your heart to give a needy dog a home, instead of going to a breeder.
Thanks, Steph
Others on here all know me, ask anyone....
