I've owned great dogs from Czech, DDR, WG & mix lines. In the end looking back I don't remember the dog's lines just the health, temperament & how they worked. It's more imporant to find a nice dog with the kind of temperament & drive level for your lifestyle & needs than base on where the dog's pedigree can be traced back too.

I am not a breeder or trainer. I am just a guy that loves GSD's. I have had four GSD's in my life. My last is a DDR GSD. Is there a difference between them, absolutely. My DDR is not a family dog, like the others. He is also bigger, stronger and more stubborn. He is harder to train, even though he is smarter than the others. He likes people and other dogs, but he prefers "his" person. He has no fear and is very adventurous. Our trainer told us that he is a working dog, not a family pet. He is certainly more protective than my other shepherds. He is a great companion and a very good bodyguard. The other GSD's were more defensive, say of the house and everyone, the DDR is more protective, especially of his person.

My(pure) DDR dog is nothing like that Eiger, so you can't go by the lines, you must go by the dog.  There are too many dogs in the mix to pinpoint an exact type.

Well said, Mrs. Sable. Even in a litter, you will get different dogs.

One has to have a patience to KNOW how to raise a dog properly. I have west dog, czech dog, mix of them, some KNVP blood mixed in them some west/ddr and Czech dog and EVERY single one of them calms down in the house. They all work, some better than others, some are civil and some are more prey driven.

They all have to offer something, something I like about every single one of these dog and I dislike as well. They are all calm in the house, playfull with each other and respectful of me and each other, love to hike and when I am overwhelmed with things they can go without serious exercise for weeks without crappy habits happening in my back yard...

BTW every single dog I have is trained in Schutz some in PPD for shits and giggles. Some are better trackers than others but all have a job! Two girls I am hoping to compete with.. they can do it I am the one who needs to work on crap. One of them is Czech and the other one is a mix of whatever I can think of... GOOD DOG IS A GOOD DOG!

Thanks Chaz

Hi Destiny, yes, she is like what he described his DDR dog to be.   I believe she  is what most on here would call a 'real' dog.  Certainly has courage, fight drive and aggression,  and is razor sharp - especially if you are a man.  (She might just be picking up on my vibes. )  She is also very territorial and loyal to one person.  She is a lot of dog, hard in the way that she needs a very stern correction (or 2) to get through to her.  My DDR dog couldn't be more opposite.

I pm'd you. :)
