Siantha....I would NEVER let my dog out of my site at a vet...or anywhere else. I control what happens with my dog. If a vet wouldn't allow it...there is a whole list of vets in the yellow pages! We are paying them, although most know very little about handling and respecting a working dog. You are not paying for their opinion of your ability to handle/control your dog.

I completely agree with Debbie............
Never let your dog out of your sight........there's no reason for it.
If they say they need to take your dog to the back, just walk with them, if they say no, collect your dog and go somewhere else.

I don't like the idea of my dog being handled out of my sight, as a matter of fact I object to someone else restraining my dog as I will know if/when they are trying to bite, and when they'd just rather be somewhere else... But from working for a vet many many years I also know that legally if my dog should bite ME while he's being worked on the Vet is responsible! Seems bassAckwards to me, but true. Fortunately the vets in this area where I go know me, and know that I was generally the aide who was called in to hold the hard cases. So most of the time I don't have a problem.
As far as the vet wanting to wait on the antibiotics, they may have felt that having just been thru a round of antibiotics, and then a treatment for Giardia your dog's system was rather stressed. Worse fear would be that you could develope antibiotic resistant strain of whatever was causing the infection. Tis a crap shoot as to which is the right way to go.

Hope he gets to feeling better soon. I am a firm believer in especially with these dogs you need a vet tht you have a very good working relationship with and that you trust. My vet would never dream of even xraying my dog without me in the room, he doesn't even bother to bring a tech in the room when he examines my dogs because I will be the one that restrains them. Especially if your dog has any kind of training in bitework etc that dog is not going to be happy about someone else trying to restrain it. But just like your kids doctor get a vet you trust and don't let them push you around you are paying them so they work for you!

Get a copy of the vet records or have them fax the records to the new vet.
