Thanks for your reply, GSDPack. I think your $1800 profit was quite reasonable, if not a little cheap. :-)

Jenni.. the helper cost me about 700 bucks. I take care of my peeps..my profit was about 800 bucks (take away the food and shots). I am not comlaining.
Since I feed raw... I pay the price..hehehe

Obviously. LOL

I think pricing a dog is one of the hardest things ever. I inevitably end up taking less than I probably should because I think that person is a better home than someone else, or I agree to something stupid like payments, etc... I think I would probably do the same thing when it came to reselling a dog I had put a lot of work into.

It's very hard to put a dollar amount on a living thing, I think.

Maybe my problem w/that one girl was that I priced her too cheaply and attracted the wrong attention.

As a buyer I would expect to pay $3500 up.  If I got a dog like the OP described for $3500 I'd consider myself lucky!!

I purchased a 5 month old bitch and she is coming along quite well. She is now 13 months. I paid 1100 euro at time of purchase....plus shipping which was almost as much as the dog.

This is her pedigree: http://www.working-dog.eu/dogs-details/927578/Bo%20von%20der%20Staatsmacht/

I would have to work the dog in order for me to purchase an older bitch. Been there done that!

Judron, that's fine that you'd have to work the dog, and I agree with you, but the topic was what the going rate is for an 18month-2yr old, not whether or not you would buy one. I would never buy a Camaro because I think why not go all out and just buy the Corvette, but that doesn't mean the Camaro doesn't have value to those who would be interested in purchasing it. cheekyThanks for sharing what you paid for the 5month old, however. Much appreciated!

VK, thanks also. I think I attracted the wrong crowd when I told them the price. I didn't put a price in the ad because I didn't want to scare away a really good home, but I think I had the opposite effect. LOL  Live and learn!

the going rate is whatever you'll pay.....I paid 2500 for a 2 yr old bitch 5 yrs ago! Sold her 3 weeks after getting her:-) A club member paid 3000 for a 19 month old bitch 6 months ago. Nice dog....Another club member paid 7200 for a showline bitch...22 months. I could have gotten 3 dogs for that price...and MUCH better quality!

Pricing is difficult to place on a female. It really depends if the dog is totally green or if it's had a lot of socialization + foundation work put into her.
Assuming all else is the same such as; health, pedigree, work ability, structure, production ability, etc.
Since so much of the puppies temperament from the enivroment is learned by their dam's, I don't like getting a green adult female that is way under socialized.
If this female displays inapproiate behaviors from lack of socialization to us / visitors / other dogs / house hold noises, etc I don't want the puppies to be exposed to these behaviors.
I enjoy working my dogs also & like a dog ready for action right out of the transport crate. Green dogs you have to spend months training + socializing.

I've had good luck purchasing older puppies between 10 months - year old already started. At this age their temperaments are basically set & easy to test.
So are their drives & how they work. You can finnish training + titling easily in the near future. Plus they are young enough to still mold them into your home life style.
At this age you can also health screen them prior to purchasing. Older puppies you can normally get at great prices also $1,200 - $3000 on average.
I like the fact by the time they are old enough to breed you'll have their paper work set, health screening all set, titles / work.
Plus they will have a bond with you + trust you enough to help them with whelping / rearing the puppies in the future.

Being able to have easy access to the whelping box & puppies is a big advantage for me since I'm very involved with raising the puppies.
I do weight + temperament charts, super dog breeding excercises with all litters. I wasn't able to do this with a new adult female & her litter.
This female has a very nice pedigree, excellent working & health. But very protective of her puppies. It was a ordeal just to change the whelping box with clean linens.
It really showed in the puppies though, they didn't develop as fast & I lost 3 puppies that I could have otherwise saved if I had access.
Due to this reason I wouldn't purchase an older experience brood bitch again, it's just not worth it in the end for me.

Whoa-  people say "green" and mean totally lacking foundation or undersocialized/underexposed? Yikes. That, to me, is not "green," those are problems. That is not at all what I mean when I say green. When I say I have a dog that's green, I mean not finished or extensively trained in any particular training venue- ie, untitled, not a certified detection dog, not a week away from a BH, etc. Maybe a dog that's lived as a pet, or a dog who has only solid obedience, never done bitework, limited tracking, etc. A clean slate, if you will. I guess this is why the PD who got my last dog was so shocked at his obedience level, LOL. Perhaps I undersell. indecision

Thanks to all who contributed!
