LF,

You wrote,

I had dogs not liking specific people, or having their space invaded, defencive dog..but never fear...

I don't think you really know how to read your dogs.  From reading two of your posts and your descriptions of your dogs it is very clear to me.  I agree, it is partially your fault for not recognizing the signs earlier and partially genetics and temperament.  Now you know.  Now you have to deal with it and try to modify it.

That's true, Jim. I can modify my dog's behaviour until she might possibly be able to compete in performance sports like agility (which she LOVES) and tracking, but I would never consider her as a candidate for schutzhund or SAR.

She MAY have had a bad experience with a neighbour, but my GSD rescue had all sorts of bad experiences before I adopted him, and he sprang back from them, and is nearly fearless.  A lot of it is genetics and the temperment the dog was born with, and that you will never be able to fix.

Well, you got a very good advise, I wish you luck. You said, we all have to start somewhere and I trully think that next time around you will know much much more.

And isn't it interesting how these things manifest? I wish you the best of luck with your dogs, Lady Frost. It's true, we all have to start somewhere. And the hardest learned lessons are the best remembered. Sorry you have 1 dog with all these issues. But with your love & commitment you can watch her bloom to her greatest potential, & that should be very satisfying to you. When you know how far they've come, it feels even better! Good luck to you & Bailey, she may never make a SAR dog, but she will make you happy! jackie harris

What's important is the time and care you put into Bailey; the quality of life you provide for her.

To me there is something very rewarding in taking a rescue dog and working with it to modify it's behavior and make it a happy well adjusted member of the family.  Some dogs, like people come with lots of emotional baggage.  With the right approach, patience and work they can turn out to be fantastic pets and some can be working or competition dogs.
