Yeah it would be a lot to answer for one person.  Probable would take a book.  So if some people with experience could take a question, that would be much appreciated.

" A dog does not develop a strong defensive drive until it starts to mature which is around 18 months of age."

i assume what leerburg means the strong defensive drive comes out at that age means we may see parts of it earlier but the real part shows at that age?

He is talking about west german i assume not ddr/czech which the op is not talking about.

Jenni reread my post you will see it clearly states IN THE LINES I WORK WITH. I made sure I put that qualifier in there. All I can offer when answering a question is the personal interaction I have had with dogs over 26 years in shepherds.  I have not worked with all lines.  They are all very different.

I agree with slamdunc.  defense is there early. You have to wait until the dog is mature enough to work through aggression.  Aggression is a package of different things not just "defense" although defense is in the make up.  You do have to wait for certain traits to develop.  I have had to work alot of dogs to realize what it was all about and still dont have it figured out completely.....because every dog has a different story to tell.  You have to look at each dog as a clean slate, you cant work them all the same.

Not necessarily true at all.  It doesn't matter what the lines are, it depends on the temperament of the dog.  I see plenty of good dogs that are civil and have good "defense" drives under 18 months.  Dogs that are balanced, but possibly leaning more towards defense under a year.  This can be seen in different breeds as well as different lines of GSD's.  If I had to wait until 18 months to see this I couldn't test and find suitable dogs for my PD.  I also see it in sport dogs.  Don't be fooled into thinking these dogs are weak.  Take what you read on internet with a grain of salt.  Leerburg has some good info and some not so good info just like this place.

yeah slam i get what u mean the way leerburg says it like everydog dog strong defensive drive starts at 18 months and up

but maybe the correct way would have been most dogs ? a lot of way he says things is like it is written in STONE and his way is right and that is that.

but i love his site and reading his information and dvds products etc.. and IF i had of listen to his advice before i would not be in this crappy situation of trying to get my money back from a scum bag trainer.

Leerburg's site is ok.  He sure has experience breeding litters, I might listen to his advice on how to set up a large size breeding kennel.  As far as temperament goes and training advice, not so much.  Be careful what you take from that site in regards to training.  Notice none of his videos show him training dogs it is always others.
