How are they supposed to build the necessary leg muscle to keep those hips nice and tight if they are carried everywhere?

Come on Jenni.... I thought you of all people knew that GSD are delicate critters meant to be carried around all the time :) My pups leap into lakes, hurl themselves onto rocks, fall down or up stairs, Oh and run head first at speed into trees. ( try to cut the corner and miss) No HD yet...... Breeders must stop treating GSD as if they were mini Dacshunds....

I know of no mini Dachshunds as fragile as some people think a GSD is.
If I could keep my 5mo. old from catapulting himself on and off the picnic table repeatedly, I'd be happy, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it. I think keeping them indoors, slippery floors, concrete, things that are unnatural, are more detrimental than strenuous exercise on natural surfaces. I just try to keep mine on natural ground as much as possible and keep them thin and well exercised. That means big kennels or small yards, not crates (except for training), climbing natural obstacles (logs, rocks, etc.) and just generally letting them be dogs. So far, so good. I have never had a dog w/HD.

This is my first post but have a 14mo working line GSD that I had to sing a contract wto get him. Ive had him since he was 8 weeks old. I was careful but I have a full flight of stairs in my condo and he had his ofa prelims at 12mo and was perfect! Just don't let him jump off things to high is what I think.
