I had the exact same problem. He was scratching and the got real gunky. I get worry my butt off at the slightest complication so we ran to the vet. The vet said it was just allergies and gave me eye drops. I used them for a week and it went away for about a week. I used it once or twice more and havent seen anymore gunk or scratching in about 4-5 months. The eye drops were fairly cheap as well.

The brand of the eye drops is FALCON PHARMACEUTICALS. Its Neomycin & Polymyxin B Sulfates & Dexamethasone Ophthalmic Suspension, 5ml bottle.

It's in Both eyes, I highly doubt an injury, It did not present as an injury. which is why I suspected allergen. I did speak with my vet and he said try the benadryl creme around the inflamed skin. I did it worked so he also thinks allergen. However he did say bring him in on next trip, Vet is long distance here and he felt no need to make special trip. Funny thing too and I told vet this too, When we bring him in overnight he looks great in the morning. I have to think this is some type of environmental irritation. If it's pollens I don't know what the heck I'll do about it unless as suggested "hay fever" type treatment from Vet. Will wait to do any thing until diagnosis is certain. Just thought I would see if anyone else had this type of thing before. Thank You all very much, appreciate the many responses and suggestions. :-)

It is IMPERATIVE that you take the dog to the vet for a proper diagnosis. It could be allergy related but because you said initially the problem is in one eye I wonder about an infection. It could be an injury, such as a scratched cornea. Using the wrong medication where there is an injury could make the situation much worse. You can NOT see this unless it is a severe injury. In the meantime, it hurts and it irritates him and he paws at it and it can not heal. Finally, it could be an infection. This can easily happen and I would think about the microclimate of the kennel the dog spends his time in, or the house climate at the surface level. Eye infections can happen. He could even have a localized eye infection without injury...a conjunctivitis as humans get. The gunk you describe is likely matter from an infection. The brand of eye drops mentioned a few posts above are excellent, but NOT if there is an injury to the eye. This product has a steroid in it and will actually delay healing and would not be appropriate in case of injury. There is no substitute for someone who knows what they are doing to look at your dogs eyes. Good luck.

Hodie is right, it does have a steriod in it.

I don't see where Echo said 1 eye. I clearly read both *eyes*. She said *eye* area. Sounds like the same allergies one of mine gets, every few days or so. It's a nasty greenish discharge but no offensive smell. I simlpy wipe if clean with a tissue and she is fine. She tends to wake up this way in the mornings. Sometimes I will have to wipe again in the afternoon. Most days I can see the reaction to the allergens in myself, itchy, watery eyes and throat/nose. Worse in summer, pollen and dust mainly. I have another, that doesn't have discharge but rubs his eyes every day. He just likes to scrath his eyes and muzzle when he lays down. Kind of like a child, who rubbs their eyes when tired. Had a dog with a grass seed in her eye last year, it wept and she kept it squinted. Could deff tell somethingw as wrong, not allergies and I took her right in. They did the dye, removed the seed, she had a scratch and they gave me the antibiotic ointment. All was better as soon as the seed came out. Used the ointment and no infection happened. If this has been going on for 4 weeks, I see no cause to rush into the vet now. Especially if you called and your vet advised you to just bring him in on your next trip.

Kerschberger

I have one dog which I brought in from another kennel with a similar description. My vet tested and the scrape did not reveal 'demodex' yet they told me that it probably still was demodex. Further testing would need to be done unless the perscription doesn't work. Cephalexin, and the cremes Goodwinoil ointment for IN the eyes to protect them from the creme called Bacitracin ointment for around the eyes. Since I don't know the history of this dog, it's going to be a hit n miss. It's clearing up with this treatment for now.

Just a note, make sure you do not use any ointment or drops with Dexamethasone if there is a chance of a corneal ulcer or abrasion, can cause even more damage if there is injury to the eye

by Ranchinglady on 21 September 2006 - 21:09

Echo, please.....please consult a canine opthomologist. There is one at Davis Vet school who will graciously consult with you and your vet. Also, an outstanding one in practice in Reno. Email me if you wish names and more info.

by EchoMeadows on 22 September 2006 - 14:09

Ranchinglady, Thanks for the offer, we have a really good one in Tri-Cities it's about an hour drive, IF my vet feels it's an eye issue and not allergen we will be seeking the opthomologist. The ones here even do certifications so they're really good. I'll let you all know what the vet says when we go. Thank You all again for Ideas and Advice again it's very appreciated. :-)
