I had/have this problem with my girl. It was awful when she was younger but has slowed down a lot . Scared to say she no longer does it, because as soon as i say that she will eat some poo tomorrow, lol.

What worked for me was to clean it immediately, but be careful one thing. DO NOT LET HER SEE YOU CLEANING IT or picking it up. She may view you as wanting all the poo for yourself and start trying to compete who can get it first. lol. know it sounds funny but that's what happened with my girl.

what are you feeding? how much are you feeding and how often? how old is the puppy? is she hungry?

try giving her some prozime and probiotics (talk to your vet first) - there might be too much undigested protein, and other stuff in her food and she can sense she needs it.

management is the key - pick it up immediately, keep puppy away from it. she will be much healthier in the short and long run.

I'm with SitasMom on this one. From my understanding when a dog does this, it is usually because the food they are getting is super rich and they are not getting all the nutrients from it before it passes through them. Therefore they eat their old poop to get more of what nutrients they need.

I have noticed that they dogs and pups that do this seem to be on a really high protein food.

She must be lacking some fiber in her diet...this is natural for animals in the wild to do that...you can confirm if she has this need if you see her eating grass also...add some fiber in the diet and see what happens..IN all cases she should be pooping supervised and should not have the chance to eat it up...Gross...the things we do for our pups!

How old is the pup?  It is normal for young puppies to eat their stools and they should grow out of it...something I did (the pup was not yet housetrained but papertrained) and it is gross, but I put really hot sauce on the stool and let it sit there long enough for him to try and eat it, he wanted no part of it, after that he didn't try eating it again.  Also if it's a young pup and you are feeding premium kibble, it (ew) tastes good to them, then there are supplements like S.E.P you can give.

I kept Brick in a puppy crate that had a wire bottom, the poop, pee dirty food, and spilled water fell through and Brick stayed clean, sweet smelling and healthy. He was not able to get into the habit and his new owners were able to house train him in a matter of days. He didn't like being dirty. He never learned to eat poop becasue it wasn't available to him....

That is a nice pen, I'd like to buy one myself actually...is that pen large enough to fit a litter in it while they are still young?

Some pups will still eat their stools outside, so the hotsauce sometimes works, but then some pups like the hot sauce LOL
