It's cool to want to protect your family but go into it with your eyes wide open, if he bites a person that is not a threat to you or your family, that could be even worst than the original concern of wanting protecting your family. I know a friend that had a "personal protection" dog and it attacked one of his daughters teenage male friend. The young man's parents sued and the homeowners insurance stepped in and paid the claim. The homeowners insurance company drop my friend and because all insurance company's are connected to the same information sources, my friend could not find an insurance company that would cover his home because of the "Protection Dog" he owned. He is still to this day, years later paying extremely high premiums. Think about it, he trained the dog to bite and the dog did what it was trained to do, the only problem was he bit the wrong person. Having a protection dog works for many people just be prepared for the responsibilities that go with it.
Good luck,

Most people do not need a dog with bite training to protect. I teach dogs to bark and hold - this is usually enough and I have no doubt if needed they would protect with their lives.

a good protectiondog makes his own choice on when to protect/see danger , and can and will be 100% controlled by his owner , so protect by heart , and told no by the owner
dogs that protect on command are no good , because , if your not around , or sleeping or nocked out you cannot give a command ,
these dogs are mostly preydriven sportdogs that willnot be there when they need to be
some showdogs do have the right sharpness , but thats not allways backed up by courage
secondly, were find it ;
I would go to old czech lines , not the new czech breedings were everything is mixedup with popular westdogs , maybe creating better sportdogs , but not better patrol/personalprotectiondogs offcourse there are exeptions everywhere
I have some czech dogs capable of producing these type of dogs , and some are more sport minded , the amount of patroltype dogs is getting fewer every day
so I would say contact jinopo and ask specificly what your looking for ,

Your replies are most helpful. Having had GSD's most of my life, I am aware of the responsibility/liability they can be. Even with the one I have now, I still must be diligent his handling around visitors knowing what "could" happen. In my situation, I have to weigh the risk/reward factor. I live in a rural area, where law enforcement assistance is probably 15-20 minutes away at BEST. This setting provides more freedom and open space, and fewer opportunities for potantial problems. I truly do have the need for a dog who I am confident of WILL take care of business if need be, especially when I am not present. I realize there are plenty of breed options for "gaurd dgos", but I will only trust a GSD around my kids.

I saw those videos, and don't get faked out. That dog is bullshit. Do not rely on a dog, any dog for your protection only. Please do not look at Sch as something that is going to show you what dog can protect. Get a whole bunch of security stuff, or move to a better place.

A friend bought bought a "protection dog" from Tom Brown in KS. She used to call and tell me her dog didn't have a protective bone in her body. That she was too sweet to do anything. Then one day when she and her daughter were away and her teenage son was home alone, they had an intruder break into their home. The SchH1 show line female tore chunks out of the guy's arse on his way out. The police used her to track the intruder to the place where he got into a car and left peel-out marks to get away. He went to the hospital and they caught the guy by matching the torn pockets that were found in the yard to the holes in his jeans. They collected DNA and it matched DNA (blood) it was left inside the house.
Both of these SchH trained females are excellent pets, they are very socialized and enjoy being taken anywhere. They are beautiful and also protective when they need to be.
Whether working line or show line, with correct temperament and training, many German Shepherds can become excellent companion/protectors.
