I know.. that's hard to accept, it is what it is.... I just want her to be okay, she always had a full grip, biting with the back of her teeth not front..if she can't work... it doesn't change the fact that she will always be my baby.  Waiting for the vet clinics to open.

How long ago exactly was the tooth broken?  How old is she?  Judging by the pictures, extraction is your only option.  It also appears there may be some tissue death due to infection at the gum line.  I suggest your get the tooth extracted as soon as possible, with a tooth that cracks through the gum line like that the sooner the better.  That is like an 8 lane highway for infection to enter her bone and even sinuses.  Longer lasting effects need to be thought about, this could even effect her ability to track down the road if it isnt fixed soon.  DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON AN IMPLANT!  I don't care what anyone says, its pointless and has ZERO effect on her ability to bite and hold.  She should be gripping with her BACK teeth not her canines. If she is gripping with her canines, then a title is probably out of the question anyway.

Thanks for the information on the implant about it having no positive affect on her bite, BMartin.  I mostly want to get it so she'd have all 4 of her canines.  I believe her grip is well enough since she bites full, I was just concerned with pulling it out she would loe bite power since the root is so long and many have mixed feelings, but I have faith...everything happens for a reason, maybe having a root canal would not have held up and she would have ended up injured while working and it would have made her nervous about ever biting hard again...who knows.

I certainly hope there is not an infection, she was at my vet Saturday morning, those pictures were taken on Sunday afternoon...he is an older vet, maybe getting rusty, he only glanced at her tooth for a few moments, I said it looks at the very least inflamed at the gumline and since the pulp and nerve is very exposed, then he cut me off and said "I know I saw it, it's not infected, no charge" so I just left.

I have an appt tomorrow morning at a Veterinary Hospital not too far from me to have the extraction done.  Wish us luck!  It'll all be over soon enough.

Thank you all for your help.  <3

I agree that split looks pretty bad. I'm glad that you have pursued this futher. I have been a vet tech for 25 years and in my opinion you are definitely doing the right thing for your girl.

Good luck.

GSDLOVER, I am so sorry. I had a similar experience a few months ago with my 61/2 year old bitch. She was chewing some cow hoofs and cracked her back molar. It didn't get inflamed and half of the tooth fell out after a week. She only has a little piece left now but bites and hits the sleeve like before. I'm sure that the missing tooth won't affect her bitework in the longrun. Good Luck!!!

I was able to get her tooth extracted on the 4th, like we all pretty much suspected, infection was present so they gave her an antiobitic injection...they did a thorough exam, said she was very healthy, checked all of her joints and said she didn't even need her teeth cleaned while she was under and felt we could go ahead and do the extraction without bloodwork, she was a good girl til she knew that she wasn't coming home with me, she remembered those slip leashes from having her hips done.  When I went to pick her up they tried to tell me she'd be groggy, I was wearing heels (duh) so she literally dragged me all the way to the van, I looked like a moron..something I'd see on youtube and say to myself "haha look at that idiot and her dog."  lol  She just wanted to go home.

They gave me some antibiotics and Rimadyl for her tooth..or should I say gum, it clotted within hours of having her home so that is a good sign, she wasn't feeling too hot yesterday, but now she thinks it's time to work... no no no, way too soon, I figure I'll give her 4-5 weeks to heal...I attached some pictures I took when I got her home, I was a little worried it kind of looked like "sloppy work" to me, but I'm paranoid like that...everyone keeps telling me not to worry but that's my job.  =)

Actually that looks like a very neat job, only 1 stitch and a hole left for drainage, your girl will be back to normal in not time at all.

The last canine tooth extraction I saw the gum was cut between the canine and just in front of  premolar 1 and it had been peeled back to make easy access to the tooth root so the poor dog had about 6 or 7 stitches.

gsd124,look at a skelatal picture of a dog's jawbone....the canine teeth are deeply imbedded into the jawbone,by removing the tooth, the structure on the jaw(at the point of removal) is greatly reduced...if you get some wacko"sleeve jockey" torqueing" your dog on the sleeve you could wind up with a broken jawbone....not worth it!!!!...yeah..it sucks when a dog busts a canine tooth, but it happens.root canals and caps are mondo expensive.the same thing happened to my male,i had it(upper canine) extracted and retired him from bitework, luckily it happened after he got his sch-A,.....no big deal......there's still obedience and tracking.

GSDLover124.  I am glad that you got your dog's tooth extracted.  I just went through a smiliar thing with DeeDee she isn't a SchH dog, just my special female with extreme sound sensitivity issues.  She broke her lower Canine trying to get out of her crate during a storm.  I have to either crate her or have her on a leash because she just losses it and tries to escape.  She has no idea where she wants to go, she just wants to go, I have six panel oak doors, some scratches in drywall and some carpeting dug up in her efforts.

Anyway I had my Vet do the extraction, a lower is harder as it is seated deeper into the jaw bone.  She tried to pull it but couldn't so she actually drilled it out.  Much longer process, but less chance of having the lower jaw broken.

Looks like you Vet also did a nice job.  DeeDee is happier with that nasty sore tooth gone and is back to catching her Kong.  She stopped doing that a few days before the extraction.
