When was the picture taken ? Ever thought that might be why he is so young in that picture ? I guess the growth plates not being closed would be ONE sign that he was young in that picture.

Plenty of dogs run off whatever you give them. Especially kennel dogs. I guess no one thought of that either. : )

There's 'running off whatever you give them'--which would at least give rise to some muscle tone--and  then there's a dull, sparse, moth-eaten looking coat, on top of the lack of any body fat (even on the face) that speaks to inadequate nourishment.  And if this is a picture of the dog taken 36-42 months ago, and said dog is now a 4 year old adult, why on earth would one use this shot to advertise the dog for anything (other than perhaps a 'donate money for neglected dogs' campaign)?

Christine's right--the dog in that photo is NOT lean/fit, he's malnourished...either due to ignorance, illness or pure neglect.

Doesn't look like an adult dog, looks like a puppy.  For all that fur, the fact that you can see all his ribs is bad, and he may even have loss of muscle mass, his back end looks weak the way he's standing.

I don't see with GSDs a lot, but I've seen people with Malinois that are skinny, I wonder why, I assume just neglect.  That is really sad.  In-tact males may stay lean, but not that lean.

No, I did think of whether this dog was just running off the calories. I have seen that, especially in young dogs, which is what the picture appears to show. That type of dog usually is extremely thin but has good muscling. This dog's muscles are sunken in. Look at the shadows along the shoulder and thighs, not to mention along the spine--not enough nutrition to sustain the muscle.

Feeding the dog will minimize the potential profit margin.  Probable just an extra dog, I see other dogs in the background.  Probably trying to sell him before he simply collapses from lack of calories.

Someone will probably complain on the board after they have bought this dog and complain about high vet bills.

I don't think his face looks that young. Look at his teeth; not a puppy, or at least not a puppy young enough to be in that skinny stage. I had one get like that for a while during puppyhood.

It was a constant struggle to keep him heavy enough that he wouldn't be seized and impounded for neglect if I brought him out in public. I do have to say though that mine still has muscle in his legs and shoulders, and his coat looks waaaay better.

I screwed up the links and am too lazy to go back and fix them. Sorry.

I looked at the pedigree and compared siblings. Alot of siblings are small but you can see muscle to them. But they look a little similiar to this dog but nowhere near as skinny.
