Breeding doesn't work the way you are projecting. There is so much more than the outward expression of the traits of the parents. I wouldn't recommend it no more than I would recommend a "hyper" female to somebody.

Quote: i have a couple of "hyper" females. i tried breeding one of them and will never do it again with that kind of dog. she is now spayed and i'm thinking of doing the same with the other. they make lousy mothers - not worth putting yourself or the pups through that. i'm getting cynical in my old age and have found that i really hate high prey drive in dogs.
Are you sure it was high prey drive that caused you the grief ? I have a Mal, and she was a really good mother, first time out. There is a difference between prey drive, and nervy energy. Had one of those. I have a friend who has a high prey drive, OCD bitch, and she made a mess of things.
Just didn't want it out there that prey drive was necessarily the culprit. Just cause they are on the go all the time does not mean they have high prey drive.

yes, jeff. she wants to "get" everything. i love the dog and have had her since importing her at 9 wks. she is now 8 & half yrs. but, i really hate the high prey drive and low threshold she posesses. i know some folks love it......i don't. i don't feel that these bitches cannot be bred with any real predictability. yes, i know there are always exceptions, as with your female. it is still my firm belief that folks would be better off to buy what they are looking for than to try to breed it from something that requires a great deal of compensation. i know you know your dogs and i do remember you from other dog boards, so i believe you will also understand what i am saying. good luck to the OP.

Oh in this case, I really do think you are right about this person buying a dog.

if you breed a fat guy with a skinny chick, will the kids when they grown up be pretty like Ken and Barbie?
by Jeff Oehlsen on 13 July 2010 - 07:07
I have actually seen that. There are more fat kids than skinny. Maybe males pass the fat gene. LOL
