After years of vet bills (after all kinds of tests the diagnosis was always allergies, supplements, change of food we finally discovered what worked.  Get a good portable air purifier.  Our dogs live inside & after running the air purifier the foot licking/chewing stopped & no more itching or scratching--we have 5 dogs--all of the dogs stopped itching & chewing after the first day of running the purifier.

After years of changing vets trying to find a solution, all kinds of tests (scaping, changing food, supplements, thyroid) it was a simple as running an air purifier.  Over 8 years, we've spent thousands on vet bills looking to ease the itching torment 3 of the dogs experienced--a good purifier will cost around $400.

Hi RedSable
Not all dogs with A.I.D. are lethargic, my dog who had this was enegetic, ravenous (when raw fed ate 4lb+ meat a day), always wanting to do something.
Again re protein it isnt always the % of protein levels it is the source that is the problem
also be aware that testing for sarcoptic mites can give false positives (blood)

Thanks guys.  We do have air purifiers running at all times.  Also, Orijin is grain free, a very high quality food, although it is around 40% protein.  Could it be the chicken?  I'll see if I can find a different protein source.

He was just wormed a month ago.

You've given me other areas to look into also.  Much appreciated!

Red sable are both the previous food and this food chicken?

I'd be really tempted to get the dogs onto something like fish and rice... take chicken out of their diet totally and see if it makes a difference.

An allergic reaction can start on one food and then manifest itself again on the next if the base ingrediants are still basically the same.

I'd go down to 18% protein myself and take the food down to something you've never fed before.

I heard Solid Gold Byson or lamb was good  for that but it is expen$ive.Does anyone know what is the best value dry dog food for a puppy with allergies?

I'm not sure what Chicken soup has in it - but if it has grains, it could be your dog is getting rid of toxins thru his skin  now that he is on a "grain free" diet....you may want to give it some time if his stools are ok and otherwise he is doing well.

Hi, I'm glad this was brought up again, as I went through quite a few different dog foods with no change in the itching.

Although I saw no sign of fleas or other parasites, I treated them both with Revolution  and it seemed to have stopped the itching!

If the Revolution stopped the itching - and you don't think fleas, possibly it was some sort of mite?

Maybe.  This started in March though, so to be honest I'm still not sure.  The itching was over the loin area on both dogs.  Hair fell out and the skin became very flakey.

I also did switch dog foods, so I'm still guessing which thing worked.
Unless I had two problems going at once.  Anyway, after the Revolution (about 2 weeks) there was a definite improvement in both dogs.

Canines are also susceptible to atopic allergic reactions like; mold, ragweed, pollen, trees, and shrubs.
