I think this dog is as good as working line dogs or very close, Show line breeders better try harder and costantly produce more such dogs with good working ability and not only once in many years, thanks for sharing the video and letting us know this beautiful good GSD.

Rik,
You found one of the few that has drive, i like the dog, but to say "there is no way any dog of any breeding could be more intense" is silly. The dog has good prey drive, not off the chart, just good. I'll see better dogs at training tomorrow. Lets talk percentages, you can put 1,000 S/L dogs and 1,000 W/L dogs and the percentage of dogs with drive and workability WILL strongly favor the W/L dogs, by a huge margine. I'd like to see that dog on a suit with some pressure. Ok here's a dog of another breed that's a little more "intense" LOL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YM8CvsRvIMI

The working lines have focused on drives it's true. You will most likely get more dogs with higher drive out of 1000 wl than sl, true enough. And if you have 1000 sl dogs against 1000 wl dogs you will get more sl that will be rated higher in the conformation ring. This is not rocket science. What MAKES a dog is having balance in both. This is what we strive for- at least what I strive for. I LOVE a wl with beautiful conformation, and a sl with terrific drive. To say there are few sl dogs with good drive and nerve for work is just false. They are there, and I think the number is increasing. I love a nice wl with solid V conformation and great drive too!

atc237, debates like this can go on endlessly.
An aquaintance recently placed a dog with a local police agency for work with their department. The dog is of all things, an Am. s/l.
The exact words of the officer doing the evaluation were "he has enough prey drive that we think we can use him". Obivously there were other things they liked about the dog, but the prey drive is what they were looking for.
They thanked the owner, gave him the name of the officer the dog will be training with and invited him to visit the dog after 30 days.
Maybe the dog will make it. Time will tell. My point is that folks looking for dogs to go into real work are very interested in prey drive.
edited for siliness.

All my German show line dogs work and have lots of prey drive. My 2 year old male show line earned his BH, SchH 1and placed 1st in a regional conformation show in 2009. Yes, showlines take more work to bring them out but when they come out they sure look great.

While still fairly early in his breeding career, I can tell you that Ricco von der Zenteiche is producing gorgeous progeny with VERY good drives for the work. Look him up. He was recently imported (last spring/summer), and there are several litters expected soon from him.
