I have a dog, not a GSD, that has hypo-parathyroidism. He was diagnosed at 1yr due to a seizure from low blood calcium levels. Took a while to figure out what was wrong as we had to send bloodwork out to a vet school. He is now 12yrs old and doing fine. He's been on .25mcg of rocaltrol/calcitriol (sp?) a day since the diagnosis. Not a big deal to give him 1 pill a day.

Rickets in dogs is very similar to the same condition in humans and is found primarily in puppies or young developing dogs. Rickets is caused by either a deficiency of Vitamin D, or inefficient reactions in the body to the vitamin. This could be caused by your pet's parathyroid glands not functioning properly and releasing the proper amount of calcium and phosphorus into your dog's bone

There was a 5 month old one in front of me at the vets last week that looked how you have described the dog Kaffirdog. I asked my vet about it when I went in and he said he would be testing for different things , the words used he said in short amounted to glorified RICKETS with modified names.
