shrabe

I agree with Denise and happyday. I used the clicker and food with my current female and male when they ere pups. I also taught a "look" command. As soon as the pups looked up ay me I would click treat, did this a million times as well. Once the started to get "it" I added look into the picture. Now when I say "look", they know ecactly what I mean. I also used food and clicker for the fuss, and as they got older I made the gradual transition to toy. Sorry i don't have any video, but Denise's is a good one to follow.

That's a great video Denise.  What I see a lot (I am newer to SchH but have been doing other competitive dog sports) is people expecting too much of the dog too soon.  I like how you are constantly feeding and rewarding the dog, and if he loses focuse you snap him right back.  Already his position was very accurate simply from where he is getting rewarded, not having to be corrected or led by a leash.

Like shrabe I started with food and transitioned to the toy.  Food just doesn't cut it anymore as far as the right intensity and the drive of my dog, but I do bring it out every so often to train a new trick for fun and keep his mind working.

There's that one video somewhere of some (German?) competitor demonstrating using food to build the Fuss starting with a tiny pup, can anyone share it?

Thanks guys on the comments of the video. I also use the word "watch" and "fuss" at the same time while teaching positions, I want my pup to learn that "fuss" means to watch me and eventually when I say "fuss" my dog will also have the eye contact I want. I just started to take a few steps in the heeling but will not go further until he absolutely understands the basic position and that means when I move to the left and say "fuss" and the dog gets right into position then he is showing me he understands. I do alot of circles, going backwards and lefts. Some people go right into heeling without the dog really understanding the correction position.

I know what exactly NOT to do........... and a prong collar is just that........

Teach this by teaching the dog to focus on your fact in a very positive way, and with lots of games and fun......

You want dog with "happy feet" that is focused on you anything else is not going to win.

Balabanov has a good video, there are others......

I spent a year thinking that compulsion would work only to fail my BH and have to start all over again.

hi list

im not a pro and im also a fan of ivan,
I guess its all about how good you are What talent can you bring to the training.
You can go to an ivan seminar and by the time you get home, the moment is gone.
SITASMOM says she failed a BH with using compulsion I failed a BH using food
I think that skillful trainers get what they want.
Education, you need to be around people that can provide skills.
Some people have talent, some will never have it.

teaching focus with "get it" drive games is the way to go.........in only a few short weeks, sita has come such a log way.

I WOULD use a collar and leash though because you don't want to loose the dog's drive or focus.  At a young age the dog does not need to have the option to leave fuss position.

well yes, we use a collar and leash, of course.

forcing a dog to fuss and then expecting it to do it off leash doesn't work

also, when we go for casual walks, i do not use fuss, i use "with me" becasue it isn't the same.

had some one told me a year ago that there's a difference between between fuss or heel and walk with me, i would not have failed..........

I agree 100% wtih V. of GSDSPORT.
Find a professional to teach you.  It will save mistakes and wasted time.  Look for a trainer/instructor, that is someone who not only trains dogs but teaches people how to train their own dog.

I agree Powerhaus - if you don't have a leash  attached to that pup then they go off and smell the flowers - I don't agree with Sitas mom though - prong collars have their place in training....... for me - my female - doesn't require alot of correction - nor does my male - I got a 4. prong on him - but if I didn't have it - he wouldn't even know I had a leash on him - he would drag me and I would be flapping in the wind as he was chasing the leaves that flew by him....

Sitamom - I use positive motivation as well - along with the collar - they can go hand in hand in my opinion...... Collar gets his attention - and when he reacts he gets rewarded....

happyday
