she is getting very close.
is she panting quickly and then going back to a normal pant?

have you been taking her temp at least twice a day?

by Maverick13 on 14 May 2012 - 15:05

yes she pants quickly and then goes back to normal. been panting normally for some time now, but moves around every 20 mins like she is uncomfortable. temp was 99.1 in the morning. need to check it again now.

sorry forgot update you that the temp i took for the second time was at 98

she is in stage 1 labor. the puppies moving towards the birth cannal.

the temp drop indicates she should be having the pups within 24 to 36 hours, or sooner.

its time for you to double check your supplies list, to give your vet a call to keep him/her up to date, and to get some sleep... scissors, dental floss, iodine, clean towels, snot bulb, heat lamp, clean water, clean beding for whelping box, ice cream for mama.... re-read all the material you have about whelping puppies.

also try to get some rest, best to nap close enough to the whelping box so that when she become restless again it will wake you up.

keep a very close eye on her and if she starts to become lathargic (like in total exhaustion), call your vet!

if you feel in your heart that "something's wrong, call your vet.

with my last litter, the bitch was in this first state for 3 days and just didn't seem to progress. We were both exhausted.... I took her to the vet and we both agreed that a c-section was best. Placentas were starting to seperate from uterus and had I waited much longer the puppies would have started to die inside of her.... by following my intuition, 10 healthy puppies were delivered, all were 1lb 4oz or more... the first one was 1lb 7oz and was stuck.

I agree with Sitasmom, take care, call your vet and don't leave it too long.  A section is way better than lost pups and SAVE the mother.

Any puppies yet?

Here's hoping that the puppies have arrived and mom and bubs are all fine.

Sorry haven't been able to update everyone sooner. We have 10 babies :-) :-) :-) mom is good but today she went off her food. She eats only ice cream and yoghurt but does not want anything else. Just giving her whatever she wants but will be taking her to the vet in the morning. Thanks again for all the support. Will post pictures soon. Mav

Congratulations 10 puppies wow.

Many females do go off their food after whelping just keep on trying her with good things for now, like warm cooked chicken, beef mince, yoghurt, cottage cheese, icecream.
