EuroShepherd

by EuroShepherd on 07 May 2012 - 20:05

Cross your fingers and send up a lil prayer, just submitted an application to Rescue Riders to get on their transport that runs thru Columbus this Thursday.  I spoke to them on the phone and they said they only had space for 1 more dog, they have other applications for that space too so no guarantee.  But really hope Copper can get that spot!  Otherwise the next time they swing thru Columbus is another 2 weeks and I know the family can't hold onto him that long.

EuroShepherd, has the dog's breeder been made aware of the circumstances?

Hexe, not to my knowledge.  I know the family who has him now does not know who the breeder is.  I don't know if the person who owned the dog contacted the breeder.
I have not seen the paperwork in person, the family who has the dog does not know how to look at dog papers at all.  I spend some time on the phone with them trying to figure out what papers the dog has, all I know conclusively is the dog has vet records, rabies tag/certificate and dog license.  When I asked if the dog has registration papers they said that they think he does, but honestly I don't think they know what registration papers are....

Hmm, that's too bad...given that Bloodhounds aren't all that common, I thought perhaps he came from a reputable breeder and not a pet store, & hoping that perhaps the breeder could hold him for a few weeks if a ride with Rescue Riders isn't available this round.  Perhaps the dog could be boarded for a few weeks at a local kennel until bloodhound1/Billy is able to get him a reservation with Rescue Riders so he can make the trip from Ohio to Massachusetts?

Copper got the last seat on the rescue riders van coming thru Columbus tomorrow!   I'll be picking him up tomorrow and taking him to the vet's for a health certificate before the transport gets here.  I'm going to try and get some pics of Copper too.

Before Billy said he could take Copper, I had looked for bloodhound rescues and contact some (haven't heard back yet)  I was rather shocked at how few bloodhounds there are in rescues.

That's FANTASTIC news, EuroShepherd!!

I know what you mean regarding the scarcity of Bloodhounds in rescue, and of rescue groups for the breed...wish that could be said of the GSD.

Looking forward to seeing a post from Billy as to how his initial introduction to Copper goes!  Good work, EuroShepherd!

Copper is on his way to his new owner!  By this time tomorrow he should be in his new home with Billy.
His only papers were medical records, he had no papers from a breeder.  So no way to tell what lines he comes from or who his breeder was
I had a pleasant half-day with Copper today, he was a very nice dog.  Couldn't ask for better manners (except maybe pulling too hard when he wanted to sniff the bushes! lol)
He did very good at the vet's office (he needed a health cert.) at one point the vet went to put ear cleaner in his ears and Copper's eyes got very wide and he tried to hide his head, he knew what that bottle was! LOL.
The only incident was the vet had put Copper's appointment under the name of his previous owner's (I took him to the vet where he had all his records with) and then called his previous owner to "remind" her of the vet appointment.  Apparently this was a really big surprise to the previous owner as she didn't know that Copper was travelling across state lines to a new home (she knew the family who she gave him too couldn't keep him, but everything else was news to her) She was upset that the appointment was in her name, I think she was afraid she was going to be charged for it or that her personal info was being stolen or something.  So the vet's office spent 20+ minutes calming her down and then, at her behest, agreed to remove all her info from Copper's files and put them all in my name.   So that was an interesting, drama filled moment.

Rescue Rider's Transport picked Copper up, it was a very smooth process and they were very pleasant.  I'm really glad they were available.

Billy promised to post some photos when he gets Copper

Here is a photo taken of Copper when I picked him up.  I tried stacking him but he kept thinking I wanted him to sit or lay down, so this was the best stack I could get on him.  I thought he was very nice looking, he is pretty lean too and the vet scale said he weighed approx. 95lbs!

and here is a pic of the inside of Rescue Rider's transport van, it was full! there were two very nice looking Great Pyrenees that I saw in there.  Copper went in the big crate on the bottom right closest to the cab.

And this is what being a dog person is all about. Kudos to all who worked to get this dog into his new home.

Copper is home!  WE LOVE HIM!!  From the amount of drool he had on him, he had a long ride and was very happy to get out of the truck.  A little confused but happy.  We gave him a nice meal, some water and an opportunity to get a good sniff around and then packed him up for the ride home.  He did great on the long ride(2 1/2 hours) after being in the truck for so long.  He laid right down and fell asleep very comfortably in the back seat.  When we got back home we decided to have our other dogs(two of them, a coonhound, and a bassett hound) meet him for the first time at a duck pond that's near our house.  They did great.  Some sniffing and then we all walked home with no aggression at all.  We will be cautious for a little while but all signs say they will be great together.  Soon after our kids came home from school and he was very happy to see them.  He played with a soccerball with them, a tennisball and sniffed the backyard thoroughly a few times.  Then he went for a walk back to the duck pond to get the car we had left there.  He seemed to have never ending energy!  He has finally settled in and is sleeping soundly on his new bed.

He is such a great dog!  Thank you so much for helping us get him home.  I can't say how much we appreciate it.  I have been trying to attach pictures to this website but haven't had any luck.  I'll keep trying or if you have an email I can send them to that.  I know how to do that!
