"This still will be fine. I think the pause has been implemented to being more sucessful in the dog actual sitting or downing. As you know, first time handlers are nervous on trial day.... and of course there is Murphys Law :)"
Typical micro managment
So now instead of your dog not sitting or downing. You have to worry about them breaking the sit/down when you leave (nothing about using a stay command in the rules) and you still have to train a real sit/down in motion when you do an IPO I :-(

LOL Thomas. For me the pause seems harder! I already trained it the IPO1-3 way so that's what I'm doing. They can take a few points if they want. BH is pass/fail and I'm super proud of my dog's snappy (real) sit out of motion.

Maybe we can lead the revolution? "It ain't a motion exercise if you STOP" ;-)

BS....Thomas. As VKGSD mentioned you dont have to do it. But for a first timer it might be helpful in being successful instead of loosing 10 points...and being disappointed over it. This has nothing to do with micro management, but everything with going out there, having fun with your dog and staying motivated to achieve something. So whats the point in being negative about it?

So, essentially your dogs don't know how to sit or down unless you are in motion? Seriously? Even during random training and play, you don't sit or down your dog randomly? I wouldn't worry about any of this, unless your dog is a criminal. The BH is a temperament test more than anything else. I've seen dogs that don't know the heel position pass.

The SDA FO (FO is their version of a BH) has a similar rule with their SOM. They allow for a brief pause/check. Problem is, I've never seen anyone try a pause or check and NOT get docked points for "handler help". It's sort of a catch 22 with the FO. The pause has to be so subtle that you're not helping the dog but that's not even worth attempting. If the dog can sit, just say sit and keep moving. Not sure how it works with the BH. As I said I haven't seen any BHs yet this year so I have no clue how people are changing their training or how it's being scored. I trained my dogs before the change was made, and since we train for the SchH3 that's how we'll perform it.

chaz: "So, essentially your dogs don't know how to sit or down unless you are in motion?"
Not sure how this became about my dogs as I am well passed the BH with all but 1 pup. And my dogs know very well how to sit and down when I am not in motion; just like right now while I am sitting on the computer there are 5 dogs laying scattered around me.
But anyways, we just had our spring trial (UScA). For those that are newcomers and attempting their first BH in a UScA trial.... the pause is very very brief. If one is familiar with the AKC exercises (esp Rally), its similar to that. Stride, stride, stride, Sitz! feet together, stride, stride stride... and its as fast as you read it.
And for the old foxes in the sport.....do what ever you want1
Yes, I heard that rumor that 1 breed club is considering this as long as 3sec. Forgot which one it was, but it was not UScA.

Wasn't really singling out anyone. I hate computers. What I mean, is through training, the dog should know this.

I did a BH yesterday under Grewe and he wants you to do it the new way. I did a straight up sit out of motion (went 15 instead of 30) and got "yelled" at (I say in quotes because he wasn't really mad, just getting on my case in a fun way) for doing it the old/IPO way. So I obliged for the down and stopped, my dog auto-sat, I said "platz" and walked 30 steps. What he wanted to see is not really what I would consider a "brief" pause. Not sure how other judges are handling this. Will be doing another BH in June under someone else...
