Try Steve Robinson at Common Scents K9. They're in Ortonville, so not too far from your area. Steve is a long term SchH competitor, and very familiar with GSDs. His facility offers a wide range of classes, including some very good obedience instruction.

Thanks Wildhaus, I have heared more than one good word about him in the past two days, like you wouldn't believe! Thanks so much to all of you that offered help, I really appreciate it! However, in all of the wonderful people I have heared from about Steve, I don't have his number, so if any of you have it, please email it to me, as I don't want his number going world wide. I don't know if he'd mind that or not, and I certainly don't want to start anything with a potential trainer. Thanks again for all of the help, and for proving that despite the few, there are some willing to help, not just put down!!! Krista blueskyekennels@msn.com

Do right and fear no one, I agree with almost everything you say and I think you make excellent points based on a lot of real time experience in protection work. The only thing I might add is that in the last 35 years of owning a fair number of GSDs, I have had two GSDs of "normal" temperament with only obediance training and good socialization with other puppies, dogs and people, who went off 100% in my or my sister's defense when there was an actual physical threat against us. In both cases the intruders were chased out. They immediately turned and ran and it was clear that the dogs would have fought vigorously if they hadn't. I once tested of these dogs with a full-suited trained agitator, and the dog made multiple and strong bites until the agaitator puilled back or I called him off. One of these dogs always alerted to strangers by barking and the other was overly friendly and didn't. But both did the job and yet were safe around other family members, children, neighbor kids and other friends visiting. The dog that always alerted by barking was 100% W.Germ breeding and the one that didn't was only 25% W.Ger. breeding with the rest American Shepherd blood. I have no doubt that all the GSDs I have kept (sch trained otr not) have been normal temperament and would do the job to appropriately protect the family if ever needed. This is what makes the GSD truly a phenomenal breed and one that is more intelligent than any other breed.

Krista, he has a website so I don't think he'd mind his number out there! http://www.commonscentscanine.com/
