I am another who does not get all excited about KC. I do a lot of rescue and deal with KC a lot, usually it is self limiting. Doxy is the drug of choice for adult dogs who are not pregnant. It is not recommened for puppies due to tooth discoloration and pregnant dogs, as a side note it has been used in pregnant women in the first trimester without any problems.
Also as for the bitch catching it from the stud dog, it is possible but none of my personal dogs have never contracted it from a rescue. I do not give KC shots as they are not as effective as you might think. Talk to your vet get his/her advice and make an informed decision. As to if I would do the breeding it would depend on many factors.
BTW I have whelped many a litter from a rescue with kennel cough, never lost a puppy due to it and only once in a while will I have a puppy contract it. In fact my current Chihuahua rescue had it bad when I got her, I put her on Clavamox - she whelped 7 beautiful puppies who turned 6 weeks old Wednesday. Mom and babies are doing wonderfully.

Seriously? If you really care about your bitch and the pups why would you even take any chances with there health? Wait till her next cycle or use a different stud. I think we have enough health issues with the breed without rolling the dice.

Blitzen, I'm on the same page as you are for the most part. This is Capri we're talking about...a titled import...hardly the kind of dog you'd guess wouldn't have been exposed to it previously. I know she has been, actually, as the ancient mutt I dragged home from the pound had it. All my dogs have been exposed, actually. None but one ever coughed and that was my Pit, and he never really got sick, he just coughed occasionally for a week or two. He hasn't been too many places, or at least not as many "dog places" as my GSDs have, so I'm not surprised he's the one to show a hacking cough, and it truly wasn't anything more than an occasional one. Not a big deal.
At any rate, my concern is more related to the several things I've read about healthy bitches being exposed to KC, not actually getting sick, and yet delivering dead pups. Paula's recent experience is in the back of my mind. My biggest concern is not even the dead pups; it's her getting septic from it and losing her altogether. I worded my post very poorly; I was bummed out and it was late. I'm not worried about the doxy as far as sperm goes; many hunting dog breeders run all their studs on it prior to breeding to clear out any bacteria that could cause infection and decrease sperm count. I'm more concerned that A) it's something besides KC or B) as I said before, infection where she doesn't show symptoms yet pups are affected.
I have enough dogs that say she's exposed, doesn't get it from the stud, but since the dog will/would be here, my others get it and pass it back and forth long enough that she has continuous exposure that could tax her immune system (pregnant, no less) to the point where it does cause a complication. You know, like when a family passes a cold or the flu back and forth.
My concern with the stud is I know him very well. They said he was acting like he didn't feel well. I would think it would take more than KC to make him act like he didn't feel well, as I have taken this dog to the vet for a what we thought was a minor thing and it was major; he's a tough one, making me wonder if this is a flu or something more serious. He is his old self but still has a cough now after 6 days of Doxy. I own the stud (at least on paper) so they of course called me as soon as he started coughing. I was not a happy camper.
I had planned a dual-sired litter and this was to be her last. I wanted to get these 2 out of the way and retire her. Puppies would be ready in May, perfect for summer, and being a dual-sired litter, she was bred to the other stud last night, so it's too late to say "skip the heat." I have done much research on breeding health and all research points to breeding often and young and then retiring rather than spacing litters and breeding older bitches. GRRRRR!!!! I hate when my plans get messed up! LOL
Thanks, Hutchins, for getting the ball rolling. Thanks to everyone who contributed. I appreciate the input.

Jenni,
I thought it was understood, that this matter, was to be kept private and discreet? I mean, it's just a damn cough. For heaven's sake! Like I told you, his hips sway that way, due to a injury. Nothing more, nothing less. Has absolutely nothing to do with genetics. I have already explained in detail, whay his ears don't stand, so Please don't go there.
You have seen his ped. Nothing quite like it, on Planet Earth. Just cut the drama, and back your girl up to my boy. He's the "Real Deal". I have had him on "Sperm Up" for 11 weeks now. He's hornier than a 3 Peckered Billy Goat! You need a huge, healthy, litter? You know where he's at.

Whew, Abhay! For a minute there, I thought you were talking about yourself!
Hey, I was going to email you. Seven severed 2 tendons in her foot/leg. Dallas looked outside and she's romping around with Cylas (pup) and there's blood all over the deck. She's got ligaments hanging out of her damn leg and she's like "Hey, I'm not done! What's the problem?" Bad bulldog. So, she had to have surgery, obviously, and is supposed to be in a splint for 8 weeks. Well, let's just say we went 2 days before she tore off her bandage and another 8 before she destroyed the splint from repeatedly tearing off the bandages, despite being muzzled and wearing a cone. So, whatever will be will be, I guess. Now we just have it wrapped tightly in vet wrap and are hoping the tendons heal sort of near where they should be.
The vet techs said "She's soooo cute but soooooooo bad."

faq2, thank you for your typically eloquent post. I am not doing the breeding. Didn't say I was. I was asking other people's experiences and looking for validation/argument about my decision. Please read what's been written prior to making your judgemental remarks. What does KC have to do with health problems in the breed?!
Judy, thanks. I think intellectually, and logically, that it should be fine and not a big deal. However, despite what faq2 suggests, I care too much about her to spend the next 2 months a nervous wreck because of what "might" or "could" happen. You do the best you can with rescues and have no choice. I don't want to knowingly put her at ANY risk. I guess I'm paranoid. lol

Jenni, I did read what was wrote. I myself would NEVER (willfully) expose one of my dogs to a possible situation where there is a chance of injury or disease. As far as affecting the breed, do you want to take a chance on finding out if the meds. the stud is on will potentially effect the pups? But i also think crackheads shouldnt have kids either. I guess I just don't get the whole mindset of breed the bitch so i can sell puppies.

Jenni, They don't call me "Swivel Hips" for nothing.
That "7", sounds like a Real Bulldog!

Faq2, yeah, I'm sure you read what YOU wrote. It was what I wrote that I asked you to read before making your remarks. It's obvious, however, that you haven't ever read a thing I've written by your last sentence, so nevermind.
Abhay...oy vey. She's "real" but terrible. LOL
