My question is, how can we call them 'dumb animals' even in the sense of being speechless, let alone unintelligent? They are able to assess & intervene appropriately in so many different situations! And how they let us know, not just their needs, but our own? I think that as we (dumb humans) gradually learn more about dogs & other animals, we may realize our intelligence is not that unique.
Just sayin'! jackie harris

I knew my dog was really smart when I saw how she takes charge of things and has her own ideas about how to go about it.
She lets me know things in her own way, alerting me to a situation.
And often seems to know what I'm thinking even when I purposely tried to mislead her.
I can see her thinking about things and making choices.
She knows how to get her way.
The understand more than we think I believe, and they have feelings, and show emotions.
No, not a dumb animal at all, except for a couple here and there.

Great Thread!
Deja my 2-1/2 year old GSD out smarts us on a daily basis. When she was just 4 months old she started opening doors in the house, her favorite one is the bathroom. She just loves to open the door and flush the toilet she loves to watch in amazment as the water goes down, and then flushes it again. She also pops the heater vents off on the floor and loves to drop her toys down them. She watches as if she is trying to figure out where they go.
She recently learned how to unlock the front door! She uses her mouth to turn the deadbolt lock and presto the door is open. We have had to remove the deadbolt knob she she can't open it anymore.
She ecapes out of every kennel we put her in, we have had to resort to master locks on all the kennel doors and gates. We had a aluminum kennel built for the truck, it took her no time at all to learn to open the door, so we started locking it with the key, but sometimes my husband forgets to take the key out of the lock and she uses her front toenail to turn the key on the outside of the kennel and open the door. The people we train with always say they think she was a human in her past life. LOL
I have never been around a smarter dog!
