I stayed at all of the above and more while on the road.  Red Roof Inn doesn't ALWAYS take dogs and some require a refunable deposit after a check-out inspection (rolling eyes).  Both Red Roof and Holiday Inn have a few out of the way Inns that are less than what I consider nice.  Most of the others are the same as far as some locations accepting dogs and some not.  Across the board, LaQuinta ALWAYS takes dogs with no deposit and you always get a decent room.

I've always used Motel 6 with no problems on size/number I have in my room.

I have always stayed at Motel 6. No problems, ever, not one. From Maryland to New Mexico, with multiple dogs at once; GSDs and Mals. Never had a problem.

Ok so La Quinta and Motel 6 it is. I will remember that.
We usually are in the LQ horse trailer, with horses and dogs when we travel, which is a whole other set of issues. I ride a stallion, which some sites have a problem with, although not after they have let him in once. He is so well behaved, as are the dogs. We usually travel with at least one or two GSD's and a rat terrier.

I've never been too disappointed with Red Roof Inns, stayed at dozens of them, as many as 6 dogs IN MY ROOMS. One property, which was across from a prison on the side of I-40 in Memphis, seemed to have quite a few semi-permanent residents on one end of the property, wasn't exactly the quietest I ever stayed at, but it looked a lot better and safer than the Motel 6 a block closer to the prison!
I am not a fan of Motel 6's, now that so many other, safer, better-appointed and reasonably-priced properties welcome large dogs without requiring deposits or cleaning fees. The last 2 I stayed at on my way across the country were real toilets, right down to the filthy carpets and used condoms under the bed my chihuahua kept delivering to me as I slept.

One time when checking in this couple walks by with 5 ROTTIES (there for a show), I asked the clerk about this and was told if they are welll behaved they are welcome. So next time we stayed there I brought my Rott and GSD. We spent the evening reading in the lobby. This has to be my dogs favorite place to stay, they love the lobby.
LaQuinta in Oakland, CA by the airport.

Outstanding!  So many options to choose from.  I personally don't mind paying a pet deposit (not wild about a cleaning fee since there's really nothing for them to clean....other than some dog hair, but don't they usually vacuum anyway??).  More often than not, when I've asked about the pet policy, they've been pretty adamant about the weight limit (usually 25 lbs, IIRC).  I'll definitely keep the hotels/motels mentioned here in mind for the future.

We really like LaQuinta the best when traveling with dogs.  They accept all dogs.  Also LaQuinta has a "returns" program, and through that, we usually earn 2-4  free nights stay every year.

I don't mind a deposit, never have. Depends on where you go. I've had issues with Hilton once (wasn't even really about the dog), but since then I just have to inform the GM or their assistant that I'm coming and they have everything ready for my pup. So, I'd say the Hilton is pretty easy going with it.
