How old is he? The discolored black areas look like they're sunbleached. I agree with the suggestions to strip out the old coat.

Here's my black & white JRT--

I think he is adorable! LOL @ Michelle in the first picture I take it you used too much bluing in the shampoo?? I have no idea about dye, just wanted to say how cute he was.  I do know you can use the color hair spray for halloween. One yr we sprayed one of mine with the glow in the dark one and took a flashlight with us when my son when trick or treating periodically we would hit him with the flashlight and recharge him. LOL

He'll be 5yrs on Oct 20th.

Christine, what a chipper little black'n'white you have! I love the eye patches! Makes me think of a lil mischievous raccoon, lol.

Admittedly I generally don't like stripping him come winter; figure he needs all the fur he has. Also, he doesn't blow coat in the fall. In the spring, he gets a major overhaul. Come late March to early April he is a shedding fiend, and I periodically give him touch-ups through about August. Initially this one-a-year coat blowing surprised me. Now I'm used to it. I don't know if it's normal for terriers to only go once a year... I have no idea on that one. In spring when he shakes his little coat, it's a tiny blizzard of wirey fur to vanish into the carpet and weave themselves irrevokably into the upholstry

I generally hand-pluck him as opposed to using a stripper blade. He [is spoiled!] seems to prefer it. This time of year, he doesn't have much loose fur to pluck.

Black on black shampoos merely open the hair follicle. Pointless stuff, trust me. You could dye the dog, but that'd be your decision. In showing in the American ring I would chalk dogs, but have heard of breeders (namely with black dogs that have white patches) that dye their dogs to finish them. As far as his white goes, I'd simply use an emu oil shampoo. That combined with a/1c and he should be fine. Used to do that with my barbie border..pics of the results from such combination below.
