I for one do not want Dogs in a restaurant where i am eating, It is not so much the dogs but the owners at what they may let the dogs do, This exempts Service dogs of course i am talking about the normal run of the mill dog owner. Over here in Belgium there are no signs to say what you can or cannot do except signs for pooping on the pavement they ask that you carry a poop bag with you that is all, Dogs are much thought of over here

Yes, I can understand the concern of dogs in eating establishments.  Unfortunately it is probably the inattention or lack of control by dog Owners, allowing their dogs to wander around that brought about these bans.

Whenever we go to Pubs that allow dogs, our dogs are required to lay down by the side of the table.  We are generally remembered, and welcomed back.  I think seeing the dogs laying down (untethered) and not wandering around, is a good example of behaviour around people and location, and hopefully encourages others too.

Over here in Belgium we do not have Pubs. We have Cafes where you can buy a Beer Coffee Sandwich or something hot or cold to eat, In the Summer when i go to the city i take one of the Dogs to walk around the Market Square, In this Square are about 10 Cafes insde and out sitting, I normally sit outside and have a Pincher, 'Beer' and the Dog lays down no one takes any notice if it is a  hot day i ask the waiter or waitress to bring the Dog a drink of Water which they do I sometimes take the Dog into the Photo shop for them to see and i have taken Gina into the Bank for a Girl working there to see her Gina of course takes it in her stride

Good to hear Steve that you are being a fine example of a responsible dog owner, and in doing so, your dog is being a good ambassador as a dog that is under control, relaxed, happy and confident.

Hopefully, giving encouragement to others ....... that is my aim and hope anyway.

A Dog working on the ScH field needs to be confident and to take humans and others dogs in its stride and work as if none are there so i take them to the city where the crowds are it is good for them, I think in a lot of ScH clubs throughout the world they make a mistake of having only the Handler working his Dog and Perhaps someone offering advice which would happen in a good club to a beginner or even an experienced person,
However in our Clubs over here you can have as many as 10 people on the Work field in any one time when a Dog and Handler is working they are no more than a few yards away from the Dog Working good for a group and they help each other,
Say a Guy is doing the Block work over the A Frame etc then finishes off with a Vooruit, one will take a Ball and put it on the stand ready for the Dog to go up to retrieve it, the Handler of the dog does not need to do such things himself
As the World Champion said to me sometime back everyone needs help you cannot train alone and do well at the top level.
He said even he still makes a mistake at times and he is corrected by a Person on the field. Like if you walk along or run and you tell the Dog to Sit or Down and you go on,
You should never look back to see what the dog has done this is where a person looking on does it for you he or she will say instantly by calling your name you know something is amiss and stop and look round if the dog is standing or moved just one twitch is enough you go back to the start and do it again you cannot do that without help. The Young Dogs at our clubs get used to people very quickly lots of distractions to over come you say nothing to the dog just carry on it learns that people there are okay and soon it will focus back on you
When she was younger Gina used to look at other people in the group as she went around them 2 weeks later nothing she just went round as if they were not there, So it is good to have other Guys on the field when you are working for a young dog or old dog they all make mistakes sometimes as do us handlers a lot of the time and it is good to be pulled up right away so you can put it right very quickly

Steve, This attitude of a dog being relaxed and confident in it's environment (including the Owner too) - is not restricted to just ScH dogs.  When the dog is relaxed and confident it can feel able to trust the Owner and vice-versa.

Not looking back is part of how we train at my Clubs - when the Owner looks back they are suggesting they are checking to see if the dog as complied - the dog will equally be aware of this uncertainty from the Owner, which does not give a helpful interaction between them.

We also do this on leaving the dog in a "Sit" or "Wait" - walking away, in order to turn round and call the dog to you.  Now we are expecting the dog to keep his eyes (and therefore his mind) on the Handler during the walk away.  I will be watching for the possibility of the dog being distracted.  Just this alone, irrespective of the Recall is very important.

Another 'exercise' that we do as a group, is everyone walking their dogs and mingling informally, then two or three at a time, will command a Stand Wait, and leave the dog, joining the others and mingling around with them, while their dogs Stand still and wait.  Then they return and commence informal walking.  Then the next two or three do likewise.

Our training is not to teach the dogs how to do 'tricks', which anything they learn is in danger of becoming (like 'shake a paw') - but to develop an understanding of the way of a dog - how to become what a dog naturally seeks - good, confident, reliable, trusting leadership.  Respect plus love is precious, and the bond becomes stronger.

in our club we cannot work multiple dogs but we do all stand around the dog who is being worked or a few of us who are very into the sport will and will point out he moved or hes not downing. we try to help... but some of our belovid handlers cannot control their dogs and i cannot count the dog fights we have had as someone will drop the leash throw the ball for the dog and the dog will charge someones dog who is at a down stay out in the field or if the helper slips the sleeve and the handler is not holding the leash the dog will take off with the sleeve this did happen to me once with a dog i was working for someone else and that was strictly it she was a green young dog and she didnt relly know me.

I feel you should beable to certify your dogs to be with u where ever u go... i personaly do not like to walk around my town alone and i dont usualy have people with me so i feel safer with my dogs they have gotten me out of some hairy situations before with no problems. its the crappy dog owners who let their dogs do what ever that ruin it. where i live dogs are allowed in most parks on leash if held by a person you cannot tie out your dogs.

there has bin 5 kids bitten because of people tieing their dogs and turning around and boom a kid. my shepherd would protect any child she is a sar dog and adores all people but if she sees someone who when u look at them your hair stands up approach a kid she will get inbetween them it dosent matter who the kid is relly its any baby of anything kittens puppys noone is allowed to hurt them she is a major mother hen. but kids run up to her all the time and their parents freak out for good reason to shes a 80 lb very large dog their children shouldent run up to them but it happens atleast i know my dog will never hurt a child even if they are pokeing jumping stomping pulling she will just get up and walk off if she gets tired of it now i am always there with her..

there are some beer gardins out here who are all outdoors and you can bring your well behaved dog into aslong as they lay under the table. i trained Guide Dogs for the blind a few years back and people in stores would always say oo your dog is soo well behaved in the meat department mine would be going crazy. or i wish my dog acted that good. THEN SPEND TIME WITH IT.... man people drive me nutz lol im over it.

I spent five years in Germany and dogs were allowed in the restaurants, Malls, grocery stores etc. At that time I had a pair of Chows and most Germans had never seen the "Teddy Bears with the purple tongues" and were very excited to meet them. I would take mine everywhere. They saw more of Europe then some humans.

Certain areas in France are not so dog friendly, if you have a working dogs( breed type) you have to have a licence from that area, or your dog can be seized and removed from your posesion, i was shocked when i heard this the other day, I thought France was so dog friendly
