Ivomec is not a  preventative it is a post treatment. Heartworm can NOT be prevented. Heartguard is good for 42 days. The vet's tell you to give it every 30 days because its easier to remember and because of the $$$$$. If you own 6 dogs you can save one 6 pack of heartguard a year if you only give it to them every 42 days.

You can also buy the ivemec on Amazon and it is cheaper then Tractor Supply and a lot of other places.  Also it comes in a powdered form which is even cheaper.  That is what I use.  JMO there is too much controversy on how much of the liquid to use and how to mix it.

TingiesandTails, great article, thanks for posting the link.  i would tend to believe it too - they do it with drugs, they do it with food, they do it with animals and humans alike.

i don't use heartgard (frontline, or other) on any of my dogs.

I'm at a holistic vet - my dogs don't get any parasite prevention, however there are only few parasites up here anyway and my dogs don't hunt.

   uvw...What do you use?

I used Sentinel for heart worms and fleas for 15 years. I have never had a problem with heartworm or fleas...This year I am going all natural.....

ruger1, i don't use anything.  all my dogs have been fine (knock on wood), and our vet has always been impressed with their condition (conventional vet, not a raw feeder, but gives us thumbs up).
