JWALKER, I've been in a similar situation in the past, two times.  One was down our road, the yard I refer to as, the yard from hell.  They use to have 7 Pit Bulls chained up there.  They're down to four due to improper shelters for some of the dogs, possible dog fighting (I even remember small animals in cages inbetween chained Pit Bulls....close to the dogs, but just out of their reach) and many other problems.  Well, they were all chained, so I thought...no problem.  I walked past that yard often, and then one day.....one of them was loose. A female who had recently had a litter probably 10 weeks before.  She charged us, but because she was going for my dog, I had the opportunity to hit her. I hit her on the side, I guess it would be like the "flank" on a horse.  She backed off and went right back to the house. Now if she had been going for me...... that may have been a different story.  With the heat like it has been lately, I haven't been walking my pack that much, but we typically avoid that area now.  My puppy doesn't go on pack walks, he's just going to keep going with me to public places until he's around 6 months. Obviously he'll go to places after that, but I'll start takikng him on the pack walks then as well.
