Hard to tell from hackles alone, they can raise them in play, for fear, when excited, there are too many possibilties here....my pups used to raise their hackles when looking at each other, then would lower as they were diverted, then raise again, then lower....I used to think they were just doing it to do it, like a kid when he/she learns a new 'cuss' word....doesn't mean squat 'cause they don't know what it means....just new stuff to play around with! Funny to watch tho', & something to control, if you find them raising their hackles inappropriately (like at a child). jackie harris
