raw bones are safe. Chicken bones are very soft as the chickens are still very young when butchered. Many, MANY people are feeding raw (with bones) with no issues. I have heard that bone meal (used for gardening), can be contaminated with heavy metals, like lead. Plus the the whole idea of feeding raw is feeding whole, natural foods. An important source of nutrition to the dog is not just the calcium in the boney part, but the nutrition in the marrow.  By eating the bone in its natural state, dogs get optimum amounts of minerals in the exact ratios they they need to be able to use the nutrients effectively.

If you are that concerned about feeding bones whole, of if someone has a small dog or a dog with dental issues that would not be able to chew bones properly, then getting a heavy-duty grinde and grining up the bones is a good compromise.

      Guppyfry...

   Thanks for your post...: )

I was under the impression that I could buy " real" bone meal from a pet product supplier...I assumed it would have the marrow too...???..

I am going to check out information and prices on a good heavy -duty grinder...The grinder seems like my best option for getting the full benefit from the bones...Thanks...: )

Keep in ming grinding the bones will give no benefit to your dogs teeth....

He will benefit most from grinding and chewing the bones himself....Plus he will LOVE it! laugh
