I don't think too many "country bumpkin" veterinarians are board-certified radiologists.  From the OFA hip application "I understand that the radiograph and/or image is submitted for a consensus evaluation based on the independent, professional judgment of consulting board-certified veterinary radiologists"

I disagree that OFA is bad evaluation. I heard rumors that they do tend to give lower ratings but it’s based on average from three vet opinions. My vet took several set of X-rays and in each he scored my girl Excelled to Good, but they came Fair from OFA. Luckily she is from the line that doesn’t have big issues with hips. At 6 years old she does a lot of hard jumps (even from a standstill) and full gallops with sharp turns - no issues. My vet suggested I resubmit the X-rays and see if they upgrade the rating since he thought that her hips were better. I think it has a lot to do with the way the X-rays were done as well.

I am not familiar with SV at all but from what I heard (correct me if I’m wrong) SV has only one person responsible for making the evaluation and there are vets specialized in making X-rays for this evaluation - maybe that’s why it is easier to get passable result.

I am going to submit the X-rays on my next pup when he is 6 months old to OFA for a preliminary result. This usually gives you pretty good idea if the hips will pass at 24 months.

It also can vary vastly, depending on which vet does the evals at OFA.  I had a friend who had her male done PennHIp at 1 yr old, he scored a 100% perfect.  Then when he turned 2 she OFA'ed him, for him to fail with HD, she called then as asked how a dog with a 100% PennHip score would fail OFA, they told her to re-send them in a couple months later, which she did, and then he got a OFA GOOD,  so go figure!!

ONE radiologist signs off on the rating...please, don't think that he actually is the one who graded them. Even if he disagrees, he'll sign off on what they said, which is why I hate the politics of OFA.

I got a "Good" for my girl by the vet recommended by the stud owner.

The method was "physical restraint". I was a bit surprised that the vet managed to get my girl to be still enough for an x-ray. The process was quicker than I had anticipated.

I told the vet I didn't mind a bit more costs if I could get a better x-ray, but he said the best x-ray is hard but this is likely about the best.

I wonder if she could have gotton a better grade if she was under general.

It all depends on which vet grades first my vet says they do not want to piss off the first guy so they usually agree. Use the SV it is a top notch rating system IMO. Fast Normals and FCI B's I have seen go Good OFA many many times Erri from Eurosport is B rated FCI and went OFA Good at 6 years of age. OFA is a crapshoot so you take a chance.

Highdesert, I have never seen a better (assuming proper positioning) xray under general. Too much allowance for laxity.

The last dog I did hips on, the vet would only put the dog under. I didnt have a choice. I thought that was odd since I have done many dogs and if I can get a good film on a dog that isnt asleep, then I go that route. I was told by my vet that OFA "advises that dogs be asleep" Im not sure if that's true. Doing hips shouldnt be an event IMO but has become one none the less.
