Hey Camo GSD!
I am by no means an authority on dog rearing/training although I have had some personal experience with both single and multi-dog households. I came upon what I think is a pretty valuable on-line resource which addresses a lot of the factors one needs to consider when thinking about having multiple dogs, pups, or combinations of both. Speaking only for myself, and based on some of my past experiences as well as advise from others, I choose to have one dog at a time at present and probably in the future as well. I know there are many diffferent circumstances and considerations that everyone needs to evaluate for themselves and whichever way you go will probably compromise an "ideal" situation. Well check out this E-Book by Ed Frawley and make of it what you will. I hope it helps you in sorting things out!

No, your puppy should neither dominate or be submissive, you need to monitor interactions. The puppy, no puppy, should ever be bullied or harassed. It can lead to issues with dog aggression later in life. I don't see how it would affect protection training, they differentiate between dogs and humans.
Melissa has it right. Trained dogs should not have a pecking order, they should all be #2's and you are #1 leader. I have to tell people this all the time and it's frustrating, as some people, even trainers, think it's ok to allow their dogs to "work it out" even if that is aggressive or drawing blood, rather than correct their dogs for being bullies. If you had kids, would you allow your older child to completely dominate everything, eat first and/or slap your other child in the face, no, you would keep them all in line and treat them equal.

VomRuiz- From what I understood it sounded like the pit had not had previous training of any kind, they didn't mention how old but I got the impression she was at least a couple years old from how they talked about looking for another dog for some time.
SteveO- thanks for the link! Growing up we had a lot of dogs on the farm but none where indoors and currently I only have one dog so I haven't had to deal very much with pecking orders or how to get multiple dogs to get along. I'll pass it along to the couple. Doberdoodle- I loved your example of not letting ones kids establish a pecking order. Way true! and kinda a funny way to look at it, lol.
