Consider a humidifier if your home is dry. I run one in the room where my dogs are primarily and it really seems to help. Vitamin e also helps a lot of dogs.

My dog has just started with the excessive scratching with hot spots starting at 27 months of age, prior to this there hasn't been the slightest problem.

When speaking with his breeder, he told me to start using Apple Cider Vinegar at the rate of (2) tablespoons (90kg dog) in his food of an evening.  The reason he gave me was, that he was having the same problem with one of his dogs who continually developed hot spots and never stopped scratching. I have started the treatment, but I'm only into the first couple of days.

He said that after about a month there was a massive improvement, and to date the same dog hasn't had a hot spot for over 18 months, and only has the occasional scratch.

I decided to google ACV and came across this link. www.earthclinic.com/Pets/acvfordogs.html , hopefully ACV may solve your problem...Good luck.

Hi kool, just wandering if this is the same dog I spoke to you about on Jan 24 2008?If it is what are some of the things you have tried ?Have you ever tried giving a limited ingredient diet and NOTHING else including treats yogurt etc?If you remember I had mentioned in one of our pms that dairy is not good for all dogs. Some dogs can react to something simple as the carrier they use in the vit-min premix, they can react to fish oil, alfalfa, kelp etc. Also keep in mind that the vit-min's that are chelated(proteinates)have a protein source that is usually soy, rice etc that has been hydrolysed which in turn is MSG.Now you see why I was trying to suggest to you back then to try something new, give it a fair chance to work and DO NOT add anything else in the diet until you know that you have positive results.I sincerely hope that you can resolve this problem for your dog cause I do know first hand what you are going through and I dont want any dog to have to go through this.Ok,we will talk again.Good luck

Kool,

I bought that food 3 weeks ago and within 2 weeks he began getting better.  I got towards the bottom of his container which must have had some reminence of the old food and wham, hot spots, itching, everything.
So lastnight, I hand picked out all the old kibbles, one by one and then cleaned out the container.  I added a fresh bag of the new food.  I'm still running the humidifier too.  And can you believe, just this morning, he is not itching as much.

Kool,

Great.  I hope it does the trick.
Like I had said, don't take too long switching her over.  The severity of the food allergy is far more worse than some lose stool associated with switching her food quickly.  But that is my opinion.
Keep me posted.
