Just to piggyback on jmopaso; if an ingredient says "meat meal," that means it could be from any number of rendered meats and not one specific meat. This is a low quality ingredient. HOWEVER, if it says "chicken meal" or "turkey meal" or any other kind of specific "meal", that's a very high quality, concentrated form of protein, and much more valuable to a food than the whole meat form of that animal.

We have had great results with Honest Kitchen, and add raw meat, bone, and he gets extra vegetables or potatoes all the time.

I am not sure the calories of Blue Buff but I also have a 10. 1/2 year male that I cant seem to get weight on so I found EVO is about 510 calories per cup; and Orijen Regional Red is 480 calories per cup; those are about the highest calorie diet's I could find. I give in AM only with raw at night now; 2 cups kibble and a large scoop of yogurt daily; add a raw egg a couple times per week. I am keeping my fingers crossed that he gains weight.
Best of luck Nan

Jenni - Orijen has now changed its formula from 70/30 to 80/20 -- using more FRESH meats. If you get a chance, would you look this over and let us know what you think. Thanks

•More fresh meat ingredients 80% /20% The first 5 ingredients are animal based, (no other dry kibble food can make this claim).
•Greater palatability, feeding tests proved dogs preferred the new food 3:1 versus the 70% /30%.
•Protein levels are slightly lower due to the use of fresh meats (higher moisture levels).
•Calcium and phosphorous levels remain unchanged.
•The use of fresh meat has increased the levels of Glucosamine and Chondroitin.
•The kibble shapes will not change but due to greater use of fresh foods there will be a greater variation in color and shape.
•Feeding transitioning is not needed when changing from the 70% / 30% Orijen.

The Blue Buffalo wilderness formulas are all 410 k/cal per cup; EVO is 510; Orijen is 480 so you could gain some calories but you also want to gain muscle which weighs heavy and adding a couple of chicken quarters RAW bone and all once per day could help him to gain for sure. BOL Nan

Maggie, "meal" is simply meat w/moisture removed. Orijen has a lot of meat meals in their ingredients, along w/whole meats. In a food like Orijen, what I said in my earlier post doesn't mean as much. My point was that in a less expensive food, having a specific meat meal as the first ingredient is far superior to a whole meat and then a bunch of grain. Differentiating between meals and whole meats is not nearly as crucial when picking through such high quality ingredients. Is that what you were asking?
