Deanna,
I usually apply the same rules for the dog as myself.  If I need Ear Pro the dog definitely should have it.

If you are doing sport stuff and are outside 25 or 50 yds away from a handgun, there shouldn't be any issue at all.  I have video of us doing bite work and throwing flashbangs and shooting M4's right next to the dog with cotton in the ears and it was not a problem.  We train clearing buildings using 9MM Simmunition rounds and none of us wear any ear pro.  The Sim is not that loud and we engage the decoy with the dog on him and it is not an issue.  We alsolive  fire with the dog right next to us, kneeling and prone.  However, we build up to this and ensure the dogs are gunfire neutral before we progress.

For sport dogs we start at a further distance and check for reactions before moving closer.  In SchH it is just a starters pistol which is really not very loud.  What you don't want to happen would be for your dog to break the down and return to you in a trial or become skittish while heeling.

       Jim,
That's why I never really thought about the noise being a problem with Prince, as we were all that close to the firing. It was was very loud, but it was not deafening as were the .45 handguns we shot when he was a lot younger. I really do not have any reason to experiment with this again, but if I do I will take precaution.....

                         Thanks,

                                     Deanna...: )
