I have freeze dried dog food and multiple 5 -gallon bottles of water outside for quick retrieval, in the event we need to evacuate. One of the commercial emergency kits is with those supplies, as well. First aid and other medical supplies.
Assuming we don't need to actually evacuate, I have a sleeping bag, portable digital tv, LOTS of flashlights, LOTS of batteries, guns and ammo, a laptop and 2 netbooks.

Well, today he told me to start a stash of supplies in the basement. Hubby is not a doom/gloom type of person and I have known him for 20 years and he has always been in the Air Force or in Law Enforcement. He has never said told me something like this before.....at first I had a hard time taking him seriously but.....what would it hurt to go ahead and do it? He said there is some chatter going around and we need to prepare but not in a frenzy either.
So, I was thinking for the family I would have the following on hand for 30 days of survival type living:
2 rain barrels
5 gallons of water a day for a 30 day supply (150 gallons)
4 large boxes of matches
5 propane canisters-full
1 case of TP
8 tubs of baby wipes
First Aid stuff
2 months supply of all my RX's
4 unwaxed/unflavored dental floss (can be used for stitches if necessary)
1 500ct bottle of Amoxi
tons of candles
tooth paste
deodorant
hand sanitizer
4 bottles of bleach
We would eat the beefalo that is in our freezer untill it gets to the point we have to throw it out because it is spoiled. Then I guess we would stock up on
peanut butter
tuna
spam
spaghetti o's
canned beans
ramen noodles in a cup
crackers
honey
canned soups
For the dogs I already keep a month's supply of dog food on hand so would just need water for them more or less. One rain barrel above for us and one rain barrel for the dogs. Leashes, tie outs and extra fur savers.........
Can you guys think of anything else?

I am assuming we would hunker down in our house so bedding and all the normal stuff for a house is a given.
What things could you stockpile to use for barter if needed?

Even if nothing drastic comes from this, THANKS, because better to be proactive then reactive!
For any disaster there will be two scenarios; stationary and mobile. Stationary no matter how you size it up will be the easier of the two. Mobile will be work if not life and death situation. It's nice to have or even say you have all those things. Carrying them on your back is IMPOSSIBLE. Not saying it would be impossible but the average everyday person it will be very hard to accomplish. Even military, ex-military, law enforcement, ex-law enforcement or public safety, etc. etc it'll be hard work. Strength in numbers.
The buffalo, make a pit underground and cook that slab. Then it won't spoil. Don't feed the dog food til the slab is totally gone. Then you'll have a months' supply. For bartering. As long as you can protect it, the essentials that everyone else needs, the basics. Someone said gold/silver or money, Can't remember? But those won't do diddly. It's back to the basics. Each geographical location will have it's own set of rules to play by but if you can remember the days of camping/hiking (and if you still do those things) just think of them LONG TERM.
