Maybe all the "hardcore raw feeders" could take a look at what zoos feed thier wolves........

Mazuri Carnivore Supplement for Slab Meat (per KG) - 58QC
Mazuri Carnivore Supplement for Whole Prey (per KG) - 58QB
Mazuri Exotic Canine Diet (33 lb) - 5MN2

I wouldn't feed the Exotic Canine Diet too too much wierd stuff in it - but the supplements - might not be such a bad deal for y'all...........

Also......................just the other side of the coin...........

Sitasmom,
Regarding your links about the raw food, unfortunately you can not go to vets for nutritional advice or expertise.  They spend a small amount of time in Vet school studying nutrition.  Keep in mind that a large percentage of their profits come from selling dog food and specialized diets to pet owners. Watch the Science Diet trucks unload at the Vets office and see for your self.  They have a huge incentive and investment in marketing and pushing dry food.  The other huge profit area for a Vet is through vaccines.  I personally do not seek nutritional advice form my vet or follow their vaccination schedule.

Just because a raw diet didn't work for you doesn't mean it isn't healthier and far better for our dogs than kibble.  I was in the Pet industry for  a very long time and will never feed my dogs dry dog food.  I feed raw and have done so for about 4 1/2 years.  The benefits are amazing when the diet is fed properly.  It takes a little longer to prepare than scooping kibble from a bag but I'll spend 10 minutes to feed my dogs.  It is extremely cost effective, nutritionally superior to kibble and I actually never see my vet because my dogs are so healthy.

I had blood work done recently on my 11 1/2 year old GSD and the they Vets were amazed at well she is doing and her age.  I have actually changed vets that were opposed to a raw diet.  The vet I have now is completely supportive and sees the results with my dogs.  I feed chicken, venison, beef and organ meat every day.  My male eats about 3 lbs a day and has unreal energy, muscle tone, drive and is in super health.  He works hard every day and is in superior shape to most any other K-9 I have  ever seen.

If you want to do some research on dog food, research the "4D's."  Once you find out what actually goes into dog food you may never want to feed it to your dogs again.  I know I will never feed my dogs dry food ever again.  Even when I travel I feed raw.  It is very easy to stop at a supermarket and pick up fresh chicken and give it to them.

The top breeders, top competitors all feed raw here and in Europe.  They know far better then your neighborhood vet and dog performance and heath.

JMO,

Jim

Slamdunc (or any other raw feeders)- I asked this in another food thread recently, bit would like as much input as possible. Can you suggest an affordable, nutritionally balanced way to feed raw without using chicken? My pup can't have chicken, and I know that it is the foundation for most raw diets. I also currently live in a rather small town in the Kootenay Mountains, so supply of anything is on the expensive and inconvenient side. Thanks!

Same here.  At this point I've had a succession of dogs on raw diets for, let's see, it will be 18 years this spring.   I usually have 3 dogs, sometimes 4.  The difference in the health of my dogs still amazes me even after all this time.  I've never had a dog get sick from raw food and none of my dogs have ever needed any dental procedures.

It's not really that difficult to feed raw, tho I do use a lot of chicken.  Phaedra, can your dog eat turkey?  Do you have a source for Oma's Pride or Bravo?  I buy the ground tripe mixes as part of what I feed, and my dogs are crazy for it.  They also love turkey hearts and necks, and pork neck bones.

I don't understand how the pet food industry managed to convince people that it's more difficult to properly feed a dog than it is to feed a child.  Guess the same way people have been convinced that spay/neuter is necessary for health reasons and that you're irresponsible if you don't speuter your dog.

I just started feeding raw in September so I am very new. I have gone thru recalls with kibble and that is frustrating. Feeding raw is not easy and my wife hates it. ( Takes up most room in my freezer). But I refuse to allow some company that doesnt love my dog to dictate what they eat. I decide my dogs love, great energy and coat. Stoole doesnt smell. I have an 8 year old beagle that has been on kibble all her life. Her teeth have always been an issue as I have never been consistent with brushing. Her breath doesnt stink and her teeth are mostly white after a few months. No chemicals to clean them. She jumps over anything and that seems to be the result of feeling athletic. My GSD's coat feels like a teddy bear. I enjoy the extra time I put into feeding them. I have spent countless hours reading ingredients. So my dog's food has always been a focus. I really enjoy feeding them raw healthy food. It takes take to tweek and get it where you want it but I enjoy but no for all owners.

Most vest do not study nutrition.  They get the basic stuff in school but do not know.  They do understand economics and who makes them more money.

There are a few, but in my experience calling on 100's of them to carry a raw diet they are few.

PS, the studying nutrition is their words not mine)

When I switched my two GSDs in 1998 to raw it was because the older one had severe allergies.  My vet at that time was not pro-raw feeding but, one of her best friends fed raw, so she was neutral about it.

Over the years, she watched both of my dogs improve radically.  She got to watch the transition.  Needless to say, seeing is believing, so she switched.

She watched Shadow go from a 5 year old dog who had steriod shots to get through the winter to a dog who needed nothing.  He lived to be thirteen.  He ate a bowl of chicken parts the day before he died.
